The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

Ok folks I have an idea. Each week I will post a challenge centered around scrapping one localized event, person, data type or whatever. Let's see how many posts we can get going here. If you are just beginning and need some help, please ask. No question is too small. I know a lot of people are afraid to speak up, but this group is for helping and learning, and I cannot possibly know what it is people need help with or information about if you don't tell me. If you wait for the information to just turn up one day you may be waiting for a long time.

So, this week's challenge - Scrap a census data sheet.

Census data is one of the easiest types of data to find, and just about everyone has some. If you really don;t have one of your own family, scrap someone else's :P

Add some journaling, a title, and some appropriate embellishments. It can be digital or paper, and in any size. Take a picture of it or scan it (is paper) and post your completed image here. Challenge will run until next Sunday, when a new challenge will be given.

Have fun and happy scrappin'

The top half of this page is about the 1784 tax records as there are no 1790 Census for Rockingham Co VA
1784 Heads of Families - Rockingham County, VA

The original copies of the first census in 1790 for Virginia were burned during the War of 1812. In an effort to reconstruct the census, manuscript lists of state enumerations for the years 1782, 1783, 1784 and 1785 were compiled. Please note that this list is NOT complete. I have numerous ancestors who were in the county at that time who are not shown on this list.

Records of the State Enumerations: 1782 to 1785
Originally published 1908 by Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C.
Reprinted 1993 by American Genealogical Lending Library
Transcribed from microfiche
John Fitzwater was enumerator
White soles Dwellings Other Buildings
Parrot, Samuel 6 1 ---
Parrot, Joseph 4 1 1

The documents shown are of the 1810 Census and all the families in Rockingham Co at the time marked with arrows.
This is really nice too, and shows us another way to add content, by including the overall area stats. This is something that had not occurred to me yet. Thanks for the idea and thanks for participating.
This is a great idea! I'm going to try this one, I just have to find some time....
Here's mine:

Great layout. I love your letters and buttons as elements.
Do you need olde time elements. There is a new blog and
I love the stuff.

Enjoy
Another fine example for us. The mixture of textures and the buttons definitely add to the overall feeling of this design. Thanks for contributing. :)
Ok...here we go. I've played around with some stuff, but this is the first time I've tried anything like this. Since you announced the challenge I've been working on trying to come up with something decent. This is my grandfather and his family from the 1900 census in Appling Co., GA. Most of the elements have significance. There is a picture of the family taken around that time frame, a map of GA showing the county and a small map of the county. There is, of course, the census record itself, with a cutout of the family. They were farmers and probably grew cotton, among other things, so we have the cotton and the cotton flower. The large flowers are the Cherokee Rose, the state flower of GA. Any critiques are welcome. I want the next one to be better than the first :)

WOW there is so much said on this page The Photo and then the census where they were listed and then you were so clever and added the map so people will know where they were. WONDERFUL and so thoughtful!!
Thanks Marcia. I tried to put a little flesh and bones on it.I never knew him, so don't really have a lot of info to do that with. . He was about 70 when my father was born. I started to put something about his being a soldier in the Civil War, but decided this was about a moment in time, not his life. Thanks for your comments.
Do another page for him about the Civil War. If you know his unit you might find on Google about that unit and battles they were in. Also on Footnotes Brady's photos are there FREE and I think Nast of Christmas art fame also has art online. I can't recall the magazine during Civil War that he sketched for.
You can still do a page without a photo in uniform. Just tell the story of his unit with a few embellishments. Keep up the good work.
P. S. I love your "Flesh and Bones" that is the essence of the scrapbook. The gedcom is the cold facts but here we give our ancestors life.
What a great layout. This is a perfect example of what we are trying to achieve here. The elements you included, even if you hadn't had a photo, are all great ideas. Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you to all who have so far sent in entries for this challenge. All of them are really great and each one has shown us something different to get ideas from. Even though we will be starting a new challenge today, we will not be closing out challenges. Feel free to add your census layout anytime in the future.
