I research the Wolford families. I know there were African Americans named Wolford in the USCT during the Civil War. I would like to hear from anyone with ancestors with this surname and particularly if they served in the USCT. Thanks for your time. Jim Avery

Jim,
What state did they serve from? Do you know what Unit they fought in? Is there a particular State you want us to look at?

Hello Jim,

I'm not a WOLFORD descendant, but the site http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm will show there were 251 WOLFORD's who fought for the Union in the CW, eight (8) of these gentlemen were with the USCT's. In case you don't have the names of these men and their units here is a list::
Charles Wolford USCC 2nd Reg't
George Wolford USCI 32nd Reg't
Isaac Wolford USCI 29th Reg't
Jenkins Wolford USCI 10th Reg't
Jenkins Wolford USCI 76th Reg't
Jenkins Wolford USCI 77th Reg't
Mark Wolford USCI 22nd Reg't
William Wolford USCI 61st Reg't

There MAY have been AA's surnamed WOLFORD who fought with non-USCT units, but that would be difficult to ascertain from the CW Soldiers & Sailors System.

Hope this is of some help,

Art Thomas
