Sometimes it's hard to see the trees for the forest...

Ancestry.com is a subscription based membership site with tons of genealogy databases. But what many genealogists don't realize is that Ancestry has almost 300 FREE databases - yes - entirely FREE, no strings attached to search.

This seems to be a well kept genealogy secret!

Some examples of these free genealogy records are New York Marble Cemetery Records, New York City, NY, 1830-1937, Wuerttemberg, Germany Emigration Index, Philadelphia German Immigration, 1700-75 & WWI Civilian Draft Registrations . These are only 5 of the 280+ records Ancestry.com offers for free.

I would like to add that some larger library systems offer FREE access to ALL of ancestry.com in their libraries. That is the case here in Hennepin County, Minnesota- so make sure to check with your local library!
Our wonderful County Library also offers ancestry.com and it's been a great help. Ours also offers Heritage Quest to boot! I highly recommend anyone starting out their genealogy to start at their local libraries. They are a wealth of info and help!
How does a person get into to them because I come to a blockand how do I find out about these; where do I search.

I subscribe to Ancestry, but this is still great info. Thanks!
I have to add to the excellent ideas from those suggesting utilizing libraries, that very often small town libraries don't have these resources. BUT you can always plan a day trip to your nearest city library which does have the resources being mentioned.
I'm at the end of my free trial period at Ancestry.com. I'm going to continue the subscription one more month because I really did get a lot of value out of it and it seemed to "get me going" on converting my Mom's research into something I could use online and share with my siblings. However, I do not plan on continuing the subscription after that first month.

Ancestry says that if I cancel my subscription, I won't get the "Hints" that show up on my family members that tells me new information is available -- I kind of like that but don't think it's worth $20/mo or $156/yr.

Will I still be able to continue researching and adding info and people to my tree on Ancestry.com if I cancel my paid subscription? They say I'll still be able to share it with others too... is that really true or is it limited somehow?

I think that Ancestry.com is a pretty cool product but, doggone it, it's 'spensive.

Hi Lorine,
How can I use this "free" 300 data bases service from Ancestry.com? I am not a member of Ancestry.com, I don't live in the USA, and there are no libraries around to help me neither. So, how does it work? How can I contact them to use this free listing, for my own genealogy research on my family?

Hi Dianne, You can use Ancestry's free databases by going to the URL I gave in my first note, or going directly to Ancestry. Then you have 2 choices - hunt for the free databases (many of the titles are provided on the link I gave) and then search directly in them OR use the main Ancestry Search box and ignore hits that require payment to view.
