Hi! new to GenealogyWise, and this is the first group I have joined. as the unofficial "family historian/genealogist" I am doing my best to find the family of my husband's paternal grandmother. she came to the US (NYC) with one of her parents, who came separately. unfortunately both her parents died, and she and a sister ended up in an orphanage in NYC. she was adopted, from there, and her name was changed. but she did know her history, or someone told her later. (she is deceased now). I have managed to track her family down in the Slovakia, Church and Synagogue Books, 1592-1910 database on Ancestry. they were in Košice, Košice, Slovakia/Kassa, Austria-Hungary (same place, different times it belonged to different countries.) Surnames: Meskó, Darab, Hayus/Hajusz, and Tamasovszky. I haven't gotten past my husband's grandmother's grandparents.

One must keep in mind that due to wars and takeovers the borders of lands once thought of as Hungary might in fact be Croatian, German , Austrian, or any number of Slovak countries today...I use every search engine imaginable... first go to google and have alerts for the surnames established so that you get alerts from google when a name you are looking for comes on the internet as news or if anyone else has inquired on the web about a name... also go to Surname lists that might have discussions about surnames or religious followings...also try Hungary@rootsweb... join this group and there are many who can help with your surnames....

I'm just starting to work on my son-in-law family roots in Hungary and would appreciate any starting points for that country. The surnames I have at this point are Kasa, Korcsok and possibly Simon. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's been a long hot, wet summer...now back to genealogy. I rec'd a copy of a application for social security. My grandma (Susie Smutko b. 1898) listed her parents as Stefan (Istvan) Orban and Julianna Varju. The only birth place she listed was Hungary. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for relatives of Eva and Anna Szmolar/Smolar/Smoller. They came to Ellis Island on the SS Franconia on Dec. 9 1913 with their mother Katalin from Tamesvar Hungary. Eva was 16 and Anna was 8. It's possible brother Adam and the father were already here. Don't have much else, Anna was my mother's mother and an amazing cook!

Looking for any records for my Grandma Susie (Zsa Zsa) Orban b. 3 JUN 1898 Budapest, Hungary. Came to America in 1913 (age 14). I was told that her father and brother were in the Hungarian military and that she was sent here for protection. I also remember a story of a sister who died in a fire. So far I have: Married Ambrose Smutko (1920 census shows Andy). Lived in Perth Amboy, NJ 1917. Shows up on the 1920 census in PA. Moved to Clothier, WV in the mid 20s. They had seven children. Amby died in 1929 in a mining accident. In the 1930s Susie met my Grandpa Joe Piegza (b. 1888 Poland) and had my mother Margaret in 1932. Grandpa Joe was shot and died in 1941 in Logan, WV. Susie died Jan 1986.
As a child I remember spending the summers with Grandma Susie and the wonderful aromas from the kitchen, which we were not allowed to enter when she was baking, I would sit in the doorway and watch her bake and cook. Yum what great memories.

just had a thought... why not submit a recipe a month to the list....I do know that recipes change from area to area.... my mother was from the North of Hungary and my father in law from the south and some dishes with the same name were entirely different..

I have many authentic Hungarian Recipes that I use all the time. Main Dishes, salads, and desserts. Let me know if there are any you would like and, I'll do my best!!!
