The RED BOOK OF SCOTLAND is an extension of the research work of Gordon MacGregor into the Perthshire region of Scotland. Following on from Perthshire, the aim of the project is to conduct similar indepth research into each individual region of Scotland which will eventually culminate in the series of publications entitled The Red Book of Scotland.

Major General John Primrose Douglas C.B. was born in Perth on 22 February 1908. Educated at Perth Academy and St. Andrew’s University, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and was awarded string of medals from the U.S.A., Czechoslovakia, France, Netherlands, Germany Belgium and the UK.
Can anyone help identify his family?

Hi William - re: your post about the Barracks. I am a great-great granddaughter of Capt Alexander Barrack. Documents from The Aberdeen and NE Scotland Family History Society show his father, Alexander, as being the second child of William Barrack and Barbara Pirie, born 1802. In turn, his grandfather William is shown as being the first son of Alexander Barrack and a Christian Brock or Brook, and born 1 November 1767, some time after the death of George Douglas, 2nd Earl of Dumbarton. My records end with the generation before, being an Alexander Barrack and an Isabel Wishart. The only date recorded is their marriage - 11 Oct 1741, at Ellon, when the Earl would have been quite old (for that time). I don't have anything back further, but this last Alexander, if he were married at, say, 20, could be in the frame as the imported Barrack. The Earl would have been in his 30s when this Alexander was born, if Alexander married at 20-ish. The Barracks back to him were all millers, farming and milling in the area, before Captain Alex's generation took to sea and left. We are intrigued to know just how our Barracks became associated with the theory of an illegitimate son of the Earl..indeed why there is even a theory about a child..albeit it would have had to have been in this earlier generation..

Researching BEGG / BEIG / BEG family that appears originated in Perth then moved to Angus (Forfar), residing around Dundee. Married into COUPAR, RAMSAY, INNES, BELL and ANDERSON families. Jim.

57,000 of historic records from the Perthshire area were made available by the website Ancestry.co.uk this week.

The records date from 1566 to 1901 and cover records from school admissions and surveys of the local militia. They include the Perthshire School Registers of Admissions and Withdrawals, which contains the names of around 75,000 pupils covering the period 1869 to 1901.

Each record typically contains the name and date of birth of the child, their home address and notes on their academic progress.

The Perthshire Militia Survey of 1802 also forms part of the archive. It contains more than 1,300 records of men in every household who were eligible to fight in the militia. The records were collated from forms sent to households in 1802 demanding that every able-bodied man between the age of 18 and 45 made themselves known.
