Looking for information about Laurence BURNS 1750-1812, of SC and Maury County, TN. Came to the U.S. in 1764, port Charleston, SC. Married Rachel TRANTHAM. Known children are: George; Rachel and Lawrence/Laurence. Their son, George BURNS and wife, Elizabeth PEACH, are my direct line, of Williamson County, TN.

My gggrandmother Margaret Cirocia Burns, born 2Feb1844 in Stewart County, TN and died 17Sep1930 in Creal Springs, IL.

Her father: Cyrus Addo Burns, born 1803 York Co, SC -1881 Johnson Co, IL.

Her mother:Elizabeth Johnson Enloe. 1803 York Co, SC-1857

I am descended from Walter Burns and his wife Agnes Anderson, of Lanark County Ontario, through their son Walter married to Mary Ann Roberts (her second husband was James Skiffington), and their grandson Walter married to Elizabeth Dougherty. This couple moved to Manitoba, and their gt-grandson was my Dad, Donovan Samuel Brown. Walter and Agnes came from Stirlingshire Scotland. Walter was in the Royal Artillery during the Napoleonic Wars.

I too have the Lanark Era books - what a wonderful resource. They helped me immensely!!

Hello.  I am Christine Burns.  I am studying with the National Institute and have just joined this group.  Is there anyone researching English Burns?

I am researching my husbands  family who  emigrated from Derbyshire to New Zealand in 1879. The name has been variously spelt Bourne, Burn and Burns.  By the mid 1850s the spelling had standardised as Burns.

William Bourne was baptised at Church Broughton Derbyshire, UK  in 1824, the son of Elizabeth Bourne, single woman.

William was an agricultural labourer who  married Sarah Toplis in Mickleover, Derbyshire, UK  and they had 9 children, the youngest born in Long Eaton, Derbyshire.  William had become a gas works labourer and moved to Long Eaton to manage the gas works on Trent Station.  He was active in local affairs.  The sons and daughters all worked in either the lace industry or the railways.  The eldest son James was a wagonmaker.  He married Elizabeth Miller in Nottingham.  They had two sons born in Litchurch, Derbyshire.

On arriving in New Zealand James settled in Christchurch and obtained work in the Addington Railway yards coach workshop.  On reaching adulthood the sons settled in the North Island where they obtained land.  James & Elizabeth joined them on James retirement.

Jeremiah Burns Born:1836 in Dover County, Doonbeg, Clare, Ireland and Died: Apr 1 1876 in Dawn Canada and his wife Catherine McGrath Born: 1840 in Doonbeg, Clare, Ireland and Died: Jul 8 1911.  Jeremiah Burns father Thomas Burns Born: about 1818 in Clare, Ireland and his wife Margaret O'Brien Born: About 1823 in Clare, Ireland.  Any info on Thomas or Margaret would be greatful.

Hi Robert and Joseph:

I'll try to answer you both at once. My Grandmother Sarah and her 5 children emigrated to Canada and Carleton Place, Ontario 19 Sep 1905 (arriving Quebec). My Grandfather David BURNS had been a baker on board passenger ships since 1888 and brought the family over on the ship USS Lake Erie. Robert, because they did not remain in that area, I didn't think I should join the Lanark Co. board. I'm not really sure what to ask about in the newspapers. And Joseph, several of my aunts and uncle did emigrate to Michigan. Aunt Susan married Archie SELLWOOD and stayed in Canada (Scarborough). Emily married Lorne BENNER and lived in Marine City, MI. Uncle Bob (Robert) lived in Detroit with wife Della DUNLOP, Aunt Anna married Ray MONNIER and lived in Detroit. My father, the youngest, eventually came to California.

Hi Judy,

Do you know what year your Burns Family emigrated to Lanark County? Sounds like early 20th cent.? My family, Walter Burns and wife Agnes came from Scotland with the Bridgeton Transatlantic Society aboard the ship Commerce in 1820. They became some of the founding settlers of Lanark County and stayed for many, many generations. I have created a group specifically for Lanark County, Ontario Families that you might be interested in checking out. Also, if you have a list of names of folks and their children who were born, married or died in Lanark County let me know, as I have all 3 volumes of Peter Anderson's transcriptions of the Lanark Era Newspaper that cover from 1895 all the way up until the 1930s.
