My Imeson ancestors from North Yorkshire we’re stone masons.  Several family members worked on Bradford Cathedral. Most of the family emigrated in 1842, landing in New York City, then dispersing throughout the US ( Washington State, Ohio, Kentucky) and Kent County Ontario. I am wondering if there was an assisted immigration program to bring stone masons to North America to help in building canals?

I am interested in lead ore miners in Northumberland, England.  My Liddle ancestors were lead miners, then emigrated to Canada in the 1860’s when the mines were running out.

My grandfather was a carman in England late 1890's to 1904.  I understand this description could be some one with the railroads but also as a driver of carriages in London.  Does anyone know how to look up this occupation?

Any suggestions appreciated.

My great grandfather was a weaver/tailor in Prussia pre-1880 when he emigrated to Chicago with a group of tailors. Were there guilds in Prussia for weaver/tailors 1860-1880 and in Chicago in 1900?

Hi all, I'm looking for info on Millwrights, specifically in Scotland between 1760 to 1810'ish. I've been trying to locate a guild or some such to try and trace where my ancester Arthur Graham came from in Scotland. I was just wondering if anyone knows of one or where to look for one. I've tried a google search but to no avail. I hadn't thought before but perhaps there was an apprenticeship system as Liz suggests too. Thanks for reading, Karen

Hi all, So far I have used records from the (US) National Railroad Retirement Board for my research, and am always interested in utilizing similar records. I am currently particularly interested in the apprenticeship system in 1800s Scotland. I had one ancestor who was a shoemaker and another who was an iron moulder (he started out as a journeyman, so I've assumed he went through an apprenticeship, but perhaps I am wrong), amongst others.

Hi Renee! There are ways to learn about your livery company ancestors from Arkansas. I know, I am in California.

I will be happy to share some information about livery companies with you. I can be contacted directly at n2rpast@sbcglobal.net Both the Merchant Taylors and the Godsmiths have their own websites. They were part of the 12 Great Livery Companies. Today there are over 100 of such entities. The specific record types need to be learned. Not all of them are at the Guildhall. There is a booklet I recommend, but it is being redone with plans for reissue by the Guildhall next year based on communication with them. Of course, this doesn't mean they may become delayed in being published. Please contact me and I will be happy to share more that this forum does not allow for.
