I am the gg granddaughter of Thomas Heron and Mary Jardine. Thomas was a coal miner, born on January 22, 1830 in Riccarton, Ayrshire, and died in Copiapó, Atacama, Chile, on November 7, 1891. He is buried in the historic cemetery for dissidents in the port of Caldera, Chile. Thomas was the son of John Heron, born in Monkton, Ayrshire, a hand loom weaver, and Susana McIntyre, born in Stair, Ayrshire on June 25, 1809.

Mary Jardine was born on January 5, 1829 in Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, baptized on March 1, 1829 in the same place, and died in Valparaíso, Chile on a date unknown. She is the daughter of Sarah Paterson, born 1810 in Ireland, died November 21, 1885 in Neilston, Renfrewshire, and was a cotton reeler. Her father was Andrew Jardine, born in Belfast, Ireland (not confirmed) who died May 5, 1838 at Levern Lodge, aged 28. He was a cotton spinner.

Mary Jardine and Thomas Heron were married on July 25, 1853 and arrived in Chile on the ship “Colinda” in November 1853. The “Colinda” was destined for British Columbia with 40+ Ayrshire miners and their families, but most of the miners abandoned ship in Valparaíso. That is a separate story. I have many documents on this history if anyone is interested.

I am interested in finding current descendants of Mary and Thomas.

Thomas Heron had the following siblings:

(1) brother Daniel Heron, born 1825 in Monkton, died 1890.

Daniel had 6 children: John Heron, born Aug 10, 1845 in Riccarton; Elizabeth Heron, born June 4, 1848 in Riccarton; Robert Heron, born 1850 in Riccarton; Daniel Heron, born Feb. 9, 1852 in Riccarton; Thomas Heron, born Dec. 21, 1853 in Riccarton; Jeremiah Heron, born April 23, 1857 in Riccarton.

(2) brother John Heron, born 1826, died 1875 in Kilmaurs.

John Heron had 4 children: Walter Heron, born in Kilmaurs (DOB unknown), died in Queensland, Australia on Feb. 25, 1932; Daniel Heron; William Heron; and Jessie Heron.

Mary Jardine had the following siblings:

(1) sister Elizabeth Jardine, born Jul 28, 1830 in Neilston, Renfrewshire. Cotton Reeler.

(2) brother John Jardine, born March 14, 1832 in Neilston, died May 16, 1863.

(3) sister Isabella Jardine, born August 7, 1834 in Neilston, died May 21, 1835.

(4) sister Agnes Jardine, born March 8, 1836 in Neilston. Cotton piecer.

(5) half sister Margaret, born 1848 (?) presumed father is David McIntyre. Married John Docherty on December 8, 1871.

Thanks for your input!

Earliest I have is Andrew McKissock born 1796 at Ballantrae and died 1875 (listed as 2 Main Street) Newton on Ayr. Someone else disputes this as 1886 Lonmay Aberdeenshire but I have not been able to confirm yet. Father is William McKissock (1751-1835) Mother is Jean McQuiston (1753-1833)

I'm looking for help with Snodgrasses from Broadstonehall Beith. A Genforum posting mentioned that it was up for sale by a Martha Snodgrass in 1820. Does anyone have any information on this family?

Hello,

I have ancestors out of Kilmarnock, specifically Low Church Lane and Strand Street. They belonged to St. Joesph's parish. The parents are originally listed as having been born in Ireland, but I cannot yet find where.

Edward Campbell (born in Ireland, circa 1808)

Elizabeth Bridget Rafferty (born in Ireland, circa 1818)

Ann (married  Charles ONiel in Kilmarnock. Is listed as being born in both Kilmarnock and Ireland circa 1844)

John (circa 1845)

James (1847- 1856)

Edward (circa 1852)

Teresa (circa 1853)

Peter ( my direct line born 1857).

I also have the wife of Peter who married in to the Doyle family out of Riccarton.

Let me know if we share a family!

I'm looking for information on the recruitment of Ayrshire miners by the Hudson Bay Company in 1852 (abt).
They sailed on the "Colinda" for Vancouver, on a voyage marked by bad weather, bad food, illness and a high death rate among their children.
The women refused to travel further than Chile, and the miners were off loaded and charged with mutiny.
Some families managed to return to Ayrshire after a difficult time in Valparisao and Lota, Chile.

Hi Earl
Did Alexander/William Watt die in Scotland and have you got his death certificate?
Did the death certificate of Jane Watt give you any clues. I see they married, or the banns were read in Muirkirk, did you get their marriage lines to see if they were both living there at the time? Where did you get your information on Alexander William and his parents and have you confirmed it? Someone here may be able to offer more suggestions to help you.
