There is a well-known book written between 1901 and 1905 by a Miss Emily Leavitt for a Mr. Lowell Palmer, titled “Palmer Groups”. It is said about this book that “a Melvin researcher is most fortunate once he comes across this book, because in one stroke all the descendants of a John Melvin, of Charlestown and Concord, Massachusetts, are completely laid out”.
You may ask why Melvin, what does it have to do with Melville. The fact is there was various forms of the spelling of Melvin. If you check the spelling variations there for Melvin you will find Melville, Melwell, Melwill, Malwyn and Melvile.
My ancestor I have been researching is John Melville who was from Nova Scotia and lived in New Brunswick, and was married to Rose DeLong, their children where Alberta, Charles, Mary, Frederick, Moses, John and Dora, the 1870 census have them living in Monticello, Maine. I do not know if John was the first to immigrate and can only assume because the family name is Scottish, that he or his family is from Scotland.
