My 4th great-grandfather was John Fisher.

The passage below, devoid of the date of John’s death, is found in the Historical Gazetteer and Biographical Memorial of Cattaraugus County, NY, edited by William Adams, published 1893.

Town of Dayton – Chapter 23, pages 536 and 537

Surnames: Fisher, Gillett, Cook

“John Fisher, a native of Albany, a miller by trade, a soldier of the War of 1812, died in Italy, Yates county, at the age of 106 years and six months."

We subsequently found, in the 1870 census for Glen, Montgomery County, NY a John Fisher who was 104 years old, with a birthdate estimated to be 1766.  This census record is from the Poor House in Montgomery County (which no longer exists).  This John Fisher says he was born in Poland and his mother and father were of foreign birth.  If this is my ancestor, we don't know how he got from Montgomery County back to Yates County for burial.

We don't know much more than this, again quoting from the Adams book: "Of his children, James married Rachel and of their children Jeremiah was born May 8, 1830, married Sally Ann Cook, has three children, and is a dealer in monuments in South Dayton."

I've been trying to find a John Fisher in the muster rolls of NY in the War of 1812, but the name is too common to find an exact match.

We have been unable to find any obituary for John Fisher.  One would think a war veteran who died at the age of 106 would be noteworthy.

Any help or ideas on finding more information regarding my ancestor would be appreciated.

John Fisher seems to be a common name. I do not have much on the line. I am related to a Sarah Fisher who married Mordecai Michener, She was the daughter of John Fisher and Elizabeth Scarborough (his 2nd wife). John b, 1672 England was the son of  possibly John Fisher and Mary Hutchinson. But there doesn't seem to be exact documentation to prove this. I would like to know more about his family in England.

I have more information about my Fisher.  His father was Reverend John Fisher whose parish was Carrigallen Ireland.  He married Mary Ann Elliott a daughter of a wealthy Distiller.  He died in 1860.  I attach photos of the Carrigallen Presbyterian Church and a head stone of a William Fisher and family (still trying to link to my Fishers).

My blood was tested, and my Fishers were on dad's side, but waaaaaaay-back. My supposed Kaskaskia Illini line was about eight generations back, but no Indian DNA showed up; so I figured I had none. Later I was  told it may have been the wrong type of DNA test; Or even if of the right type; back that far, it might not show up. Suddenly I saw the simple solution of DNA, while it can be simple; it can be complimented too. Now, I just d'know? In our Wilmington, N.C., phone book we have a Fisscher, which I think is Dutch?

I'm not sure about the death certificates. I have a copy of my husband's grandmother's (Edna Hester Flynn) birth certificate, that's how I know the name and dates. Also, his grandmother said her mother died before she turned 2 years old. She and her Dad moved back to Memphis, TN area (where he was from) after the death of Annie.

I am sorry, but I don't know anything about your Annie Fischer.  Good luck.  Did Iowa have death certificates in 1902-04?  If so you might find some information on it.

Seeking information on Annie Fischer Hester. She was born 1878 Burlington, Iowa and died 1902-1904 Burlington, Iowa. She was married to William Augustus Hester. Their daughter Edna Mae Hester was born Nov 16, 1902 Burlington,

Somehow I missed your post in March. My father always maintained that our Fishers used to spell the name Fischer and at some point the "c" was dropped. I will have to look into the Cabarrus County, NC, Fishers. Thank you for the information. Do you know if any of your Fisher family males have had DNA testing done?

Hi Group. I only know of one name that has the surname of Fisher, and not much more to go on. The name is Margaret Fisher d. 1729. She was married to Charles Oulton, born 30 Jan 1675, Cheshire, England, died Oct 1718. They had a son William Oulton born 23 Jul 1714, Tarporley, [parish], Cheshire, England, died 1760
