I have several brick walls! The main one that I'm hoping to get help with here would be WILLIAM GREEN, b. 1873 in Louisburg, NC to mother Anna Green. William (and a few other family members) moved to NY and lived as whites. My 90 year old cousin has shared stories from her recollection that he married a white woman, possibly Jewish. ( I do have a marriage record of his marriage to Sally Lou Johnson in 1904, but I believe that was a first wife, who was also from Louisburg.) I have a few stories about him, but I'd really like to find out if he had any descendants. I would also love to find his wife's family!
The rest of my brick walls are more elusive because they were slaves: ANNA GREEN (William's mother) is said to have originally been a Perkins, who ran away from her (presumed) owners in either VA or TN, and ended up in NC. I'd love to be able to verify this story, and at try to find out more about her. My gg grandparents, CALVIN and PRESCILLA YARBOROUGH were both enslaved. I am working hard to try to find parent(s) for either of them, especially Calvin, but it's tough because he transferred owners several times. Owners that I know of were Neals (several), Yarborough, and possibly Perry

Hi Gene,
Thanks for your interest. You can get a few more details about Wm and his mother, Anna, by reading my "Mystery Monday" posts on my blog - http://justthinking130.blogspot.com/2009/08/mysterious-monday_10.html. No, I don't have William's death certificate, although I do have a couple of possible leads to it. However, NY charges $15.00 per copy. I'm planning to order the two that I have it narrowed down to soon.

I am not a descendant of William, but he was my gg grandmother's son, making him my great-uncle. I already know both of his parents' names (Anna Green and Nathaniel Hawkins) and Sally Lou's are also on the marriage record, but she is not the wife of interest, so I haven't done much more with her. What I'd really like is to find the name of his last wife, the white woman with whom he is said to have had a son. So, hopefully, I'll get the right death certificate, as I"m sure that information will be there.

As for Census records, the main reason I haven't been able to verify that I've found him anywhere is because of not having the information mention above. Since William Green is such a commonly found name, and there were several living in NY who were born in NC around his time, I haven't been able to know for sure if I've found him. Also, due to the circumstances of him living as White, theres not telling if he even reported accurate information to the census taker. Apparently his wife didn't know she was married to a black man at first. so, the only cencus I hactually have Willima in is the 1880 one, where he ws still a chil living with his mother. As I'm sure you know, 1890 was lost to us, and by 1900, he must've been already living in NY.
Hi Gene,
I'm glad I happened to stop by here tonight! I didn't get an email letting me know that you'd responded again. Thanks so much for going to all that trouble! I will certainly take a look at the links that you sent me.

I do have residences for most of William's siblings. They were mostly still in NC at that time. Just today I got luckly and just ran into him, while looking for a totally different relative! It turns out that he was with the 3rd NC Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War! This was in 1898-1899. So now, I'm trying to track down his enlistment records from that, for verification that it's actually him, as well as to garner any additional inoformation those record might provide.

The work continues...

Thanks again for your help, and I'll let you know how those links work out for me. :)
I've actually read about the Regiment on a number of sites. I've gotten some really great and detailed information about it. One site even had letters that were written and a journal from the company, so that was interesting. But I haven't as yet found a way to see the actual enlistment application that would have the personal data on it that I seek. I'll keep digging, but that might be one of the things I'll have to do on an Archives trip, or, at the very least on a visit to the LDS library. An other ideas?
Thanks again. Unless I'm dong something wrong, the links that you are sending me are not to records that I can view online. I've done the search and hit all of those, but that's why I deduced that I will have to be on site at the archives or the LDS library. Am I doing something wrong?
Yes, thanks again. I do use worldcat quite often! :)
