My Dutch Line came to the USA very early in 1600, Settled in Kingston New York and surrounding Areas, Most have been researched except for my Direct Line, which I have a few problems with at the moment, My Ancestors are from a town Named after them in the Netherlands though the spelling is much different, they are the Van Wagenens (VanWagenen).

Hello Everyone! My Grandmother is a WWII war bride from Amsterdam.  My Grandfather was a Canadian Soldier, they married near the end of the war and she came over to Toronto.  I'm researching the Hoogland, van der Mee, and Bijlsma lines.

My grandmother is now 87, and she has asked me to find out what I can about her grandmother.  She died and for some reason (perhaps it was normal then) the children, except for the oldest daughter, were taken out of the fathers care and they were all sent to a Catholic Orphanage.  I have not been able to find anything about the death of their mother, she doesn't seem to be anywhere online and would love any suggestions.  My Nanny really wants to know what happened to her grandmother, how she died and exactly when.  The children were never told.  They all had contact with their father while in the orphanage, but he wouldn't talk about it with them.

My GG Grandmothers info is as follows...

Aafke Bijlsma b. 28 Jan 1871 in Grouw, Friesland d. unknown

    Her parents were...

Jacobus Tjittes Bijlsma b. abt 1842

Aafke Jelgers Bijlsma b. 13 Jan 1841 Grouw, Idaarderadeel

    (They were cousins)

    Her Husband was...

    Johannes van der Mee b. 2 Nov 1870, Leiderdorp d. 3 Feb 1932

They had 5 children, my Great Grandmother was born Nov 30th,1900 in Leiden.

Where should I look first considering I do not speak Dutch?  Any suggestions would be great.  I would love to figure this out for her.

    Thanks,

    Lisa

    Hi Lisa,

I found her death certificate of FamilySearch, as part of the marriage supplements for the marriage of her daughter Annetta in 1924. According to the certificate, she died in Leiden on 17 Oct 1916. Here's the link to the image on FS: Death certificate Aafke Bijlsma

  • Taco Goulooze

and here's the link to her registration of death in the Leiden archives: record no. 751, death registration of Aafke Bijlsma

  • Lisa T

Oh my!!! Of all places, I should have looked there first.  I immediately went to the Dutch sites but found them really confusing. Lesson learned. Thank you VERY much!!!  You're my genealogy hero of the day! :)

  • Taco Goulooze

Good enough for me! Hope you are able to find out more. I did a quick scan, but nothing is mentioned in the local (or national) dutch papers at the time of her death.

  • rottenralf

Lisa - In that time period about 80% of the children in orphanages were half-orphans. Raising kids basically took two parents. Work days were often 10-12 hours long so a man couldn't work and raise the kids.

Can anyone help me find the death information on Bouchina (Bouchiena Karels) Westerling?  She was married to Jan Edes Bos in 1839 and born in 1819 in Zuidbroek.  Thank you for your time.  I've looked in Allegroningers but haven't found anything.

I haven't researched any Dutch records yet. I do, however, have a Dutch friend so I'm hoping he will help me if I need some translating!  Naming conventions seem to be similar to Norwegian with a patronymic followed by a place name in many cases (no last names....in the US the place name sometimes became the Norwegian last name, but sometimes the patronymic became the last name...unfortunately).  And, of course, no consistant spelling that early!

  • J Sanford Kruizenga

New to this group.  Hello everyone.  I have been tracing my Dutch ancestry... the KRUIZENGA side, back to the Old Country for several years.  I know my immigrating ancestor and his family.  I've traced him back to where his family lived, even finding the home that still exists as a bed and breakfast now.  Fascinating.

My brick wall is with my most distant known ancestor: Jacob Cornelis KRUIZE (1765-1822).  He was allegedly born in Uithuizen though parish records can not confirm this.  From Jacob's death certificate we have learned that he was illegitimate.  We only know his mother's name: Trijntje SIJBOLTS (her patronym).  I have successfully traced Trijntje (post-Jacob) to Groningen City where she had a daughter and a 2nd son.

My attempts at circumnavigating my brick wall have thus far been feeble.  I had my own Y-DNA tested via FamilyTree DNA at the 67 level... zero matches.  I didn't really expect any.  But I wasn't going to wait around for a match... I became proactive.

Looking at Uithuizen parish records around the time of Jacob's birth I found a man by the name of Jacob KRUIZINGA living in the village.  This man was married with children.  It was my strongest possibility of a match.  Did this man have relations with my Trijntje?

I traced this man's ancestry back and then traced one of his brother's lineages forward to find a living relative today.  With the help of relatives in the Netherlands we contacted this living relation and he agreed to be tested.  Unfortunately he was NOT a match: that assuming that our tracing forward was done properly.

I also have MASTBERGENS and KLOOSTERS in my family line.

  • Henk van Kampen

I could not find Jacob Cornelis KRUIZE in wiewaswie.nl or allegroningers.nl (except as father in a 1813 marriage, is that the same person?)

I did find a Trijntje SIJBOLTS in allegroningers.nl, but she was married to Martinus Jager. Is that your ancestor?

  • J Sanford Kruizenga

That is probably the same Jacob.  Yes.  That is a different Trijntje.  My research is available at http://www.kruizengafamily.info/.  Trijntje married Hindrik Jans on 31 October 1762 at Uithuizen.  She married Jan Hulst on 21 August 1776 at Groningen.  And then married a 3rd time to Hindrik Roseboom on 16 January 1783 at Groningen.

Hi, my  name is Bill and I'm new to the group.  My mother's family are almost exclusively Dutch - her mother's maiden name was Doodeman and the family came from Nibboxwould in Noord Holland, I'm beginning to investigate them.

  • John Evers

do you know the first name of the Doodemans? and what year are they from

  • Bill Whitehead

My great grandfather was Gerrit and his father was Jan, mother was Triangle Bakker.  Gerrit's wife was De Moel and they arrived in US on 1 May 1885.

  • Bill Whitehead

    That's Trintje Bakker.

  • John Evers

  • John Evers

my ancestors are from the same area but I don't see any connection with yours so far

  • John Evers

    they are Winkel and Bennemeer

  • Bill Whitehead

I'm just getting started on this branch of my tree, don't know yet how far back I can go or who will appear.  It's a part of the family I've never met or know anything about.

  • John Evers

that's what happened to me when I started to search my family tree you will be surprised what you can find do you have  web site for your family tree mine is at myheritage .com some of my relatives whent to the USA around  1850

  • Bill Whitehead

My tree is on ancestry.com.  I'll let you know as I find more.

  • John Evers

some one has this at my heritage http://www.myheritage.com/names/gerrit_doodeman

  • Bill Whitehead

Thanks.  The first one listed is my great grandfather!  Recognize the passport photo.  I will pursue this.

  • John Evers

  • John Evers

    yep Trijntje Bakker

  • Bill Whitehead

Yes, find a grave photo are my greatgranparents.  You've given me so much info, as I've tried to look at some of it I'm finding much new info to follow up.  Just found that my 2x great grandfather had a sister who was married twice and 2nd husband was Koeman and I know I've seen that name somewhere.

  • John Evers

    Trijntje Koeman born 1816

  • Bill Whitehead

John:  It turns out that my great grandfather, Gerrit, had a brother John Doodeman who married Cornelia Koeman.  She was the daughter of Jacob Koeman and Trijntje Vriend.  Trijntje died (1869) and Jacob married Jantje Doodeman whose father was John's grandfather.

  • Mary McLean Hoff

I have just joined the group and have documented by husband's descent form  Richard Hoff and Elizabeth Paulse/Powlson.  The earliest records I have for Richard are christening records from the DRC in Caughnawaga/Fonda, Montgomery, New York for his children Annaatje (1772), Jonathan (1774) and Abram/Abraham (1776 - my husband's 4x great-grandfather).  It appears he had older children as there is a Richard Hoff, Jr. associated with him in census, land, and military records for Montgomery County.  I am looking for pre-1770 records for him and his ancestors.  There are several online family trees connecting him with New Jersey origins and from there to a line back to Dutch immigrant Paulus Dirckse (Holland 1643/Brooklyn 1692).  I do not, however, see any documentation substantiating this connection.  All I have found is an 1895 SAR application from Francis Lewis Hoff asserting, without evidence, that "Richard Hoff, I am informed, came from New Jersey and bought a tract of land in Tryon Co. New York in 1774. . .".  I have a copy of that 1774 Tryon Co. deed but no actual evidence he came from New Jersey.   William Hoff, a descendant of Paulus Dirckse, did live in New Jersey in the early 1700's and had a son named Richard, but I find no dates or vital records relating to him.  Has anyone anything further on this line and/or any suggestions where I should look next to substantiate this possible connection?  Thanks in advance for any help--Mary Hoff
