My late husbands family is double trouble. His line at his grandparents are John Smith and Ora Jones. I have traced his grandmothers line back to Thomas J Jones/Matilda M McClure. First I find them is in GA in 1850. The census records very saying both NC and SC has place of birth. Thomas served in a GA Regt during the Civil War and was captured in Vicksburg MS, and recieved a pardon. He is later found in Johnson Co AR buried in Knoxville AR. One clue I have to go on which may or may not mean anything was a neighbor living near his son J A Jack Jones in recent census records Johnson County AR Lowell Twp was a Enos Jones from Duplin Co NC. The year Jack is no longer on the census Enos and family has moved also. I think they might possibly be related.

Thomas year of birth was 1823, if anyone has Thomas J Jones in your family please let me know. Thank you

My brick wall is my great grandfather Joshua Jones,Ky,died between 1894 and 1900 possibly. He was married to Susanna Back of the Breathitt County Backs (Ky).I've never found him in census or any kind of records,I'm starting to think he never existed.
  • Bryan Hail

If you need any information on the Jones family that started in Eastern Virginia let me know. I literally have the book. And am in the process of expanding it.
  • Laurie Jones

I'm stuck at William Henry Jones. He was born in 14 May 1878 in Bethesda, North Wales. He married Jane Ellen Lewis (nee Griffiths) on 22 Mar 1909. Died 21 Mar 1918 in Emporia, Kansas. His widow and children moved in Canada a few years later. I was able to get a copy of his obit and it lists his father as Grififth Jones who was from Ty Newydd, Llanffewin, Anglesey, Wales. It also listed a brother Richard Griffth Jones who was born in 14 Mar 1874 in Bethesda Wales and died 11 Mar 1959 in Lebo Kansas. Richard was married to Mary Thomas and they had 7 children. William had a sister Alice who was married to Evan Hughes. Not sure if there was another sister.
  • Chip Jones

@Laurie Jones... What year did William Henry Jones leave Wales and what type of record are you referencing for his birth date and location?
  • Chip Jones

@Ken Jones... what is your source of information for Joshua Jones? How do you know he was married to Susanna Back?
  • Ken Jones

Chip...my source is my grandmother, she was also Susanna's niece. My grandparents were first cousins. Joshua is named on their marriage license. Also Joshua is named on my grandfathers death certificate as well as family info handed down.I assume and am guessing Joshua may have went by another name, but I've never found census info on Susanna living with anyone else (Besides Benjamin Clemons after the death of Joshua)
  • Chip Jones

@Ken Jones... have you searched all census records for Kentucky? I can find a few Joshua Jones' listed that were born in Kentucky around 1865. Have you looked at any of these listings?
  • Ken Jones

Chip...yeah I've seen a few in census but not knowing anything about Joshua makes it hard to pick him out. I have no parentage on him,no birth date, place of birth, nothing, zilch. Family lore says he was killed between 1894 & 1900 in a hunting accident in possibly Breathitt County,Ky. His youngest son was born 1894.Like I say,it's a mystery and a brick wall.
  • Chip Jones

@Ken Jones... I suppose we could continue this for a while, but have you looked for his marriage record? Many times the parents names were also listed. I'm just not sure how much research you've done, but have you also looked for an obituary or news story about the hunting accident?
  • Ken Jones

Chip...I've done as much as I can via internet & family. The only thing I haven't done is make a trip to Breathitt County library. But yeah I've been searching for 10 years believe it or not.I think my only recourse will be to actually go to Breathitt,I was there several years ago but didn't get to the library.
  • Chip Jones

Have you looked for relatives on the other side of the family? They may be able to provide some insight into who his parents were...
  • Laurie Jones

@Chip Jones.....He arrived at New York 24 Februray 1900. Birthdate and location I got from his obituary published in the Emporia Gazette. Also it is listed in his funeral card.
  • Chip Jones

@Laurie Jones... I'm assuming that you're stuck in terms of who his parents were, correct? Have you ever looked for his marriage certificate?
  • Laurie Jones

@ Chip Jones....Kind of...according to the obit it mentions his father is Griffith but no mention of a mother. I am also trying to find out where to get a marriage certificate for Kansas. It sounds like some of their records are missing.
  • Chip Jones

You may already know this, but according to the Kansas State Vital Records site (site), marriage records prior to 1913 were recorded at the county or city level. So that's who you'd have to contact for the marriage certificate.
  • Ken Jones

If anyone is researching Jones from southeast Ky I'm looking any info on Wiley & Elizabeth Jones. They are both listed in the 1860 Breathitt County census but in 1870 Elizabeth is a widow. Anything concerning death dates, children, whatever would be appreciated. Thanks

My Jones family comes from Vermilion County, Illinois via Wales. My gg grandfather married into another Welsh family-the Thomases. John and Thomas Thomas sailed over here to the states from Glamorganshire/Machen Wales in 1852 and the wives came with the children in 1853. It was Thomas Thomas' daughter Sarah Anne who married my gg grandfather John D. Jones. I can find no other information about him in Illinois. Can anyone help?
  • Martha St George

I am researching my gggrandfather Bluford Hayes Jones born 1829 in Alabama. His parents were born in South Carolina. His siblings were Emily, Mary and a brother name "Ortha". I have researched back to 1850 but can't get back any farther to find his parents.

The 1850 census document is written in cursive. It is hard to read. The name Ortha is best that I can figure out. Has anyone heard of that name before? I do know for certain Ortha is a male. I thought I would try researching that name and see what I can find out. Thanks for any help!

  • Kathy Jones Woodruff

I am looking for info on my great-grandfather, Samuel M Jones.  I think the M is for Melvin because it has been used in 3 more generations.  He was bc 1848 in NC or TN.  He married Lucy Yarborough bc 1865 in GA, d/o William Y and Frances Busby. Their children were: Fannie, Rosa, Bessie, Annie, John Robert, and Charlie Melvin (called Ted) my grandfather, h/o Martha IRENE Beckham.

Not sure when Samuel Jones moved to GA and not sure where he moved from. He may have known the Yarboroughs in NC and moved with them...just not sure. The earliest thing I have is from a book "A History of Coweta County, Georgia, The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society", p. 387.

If anyone has any info on this Jones or Yarborough family, I would greatly appreciate it.   Thanks.

  • Thomas Z. Jones

I am researching the ancestry of James Jones (1790 - 1862). He married Elizabeth Henderson in about 1810/11. They had four children, William (married Rhoda McClelland), Nancy (married Reason Dye), Hannah (married James McClelland, sister to Rhoda)' and John.

James and Elizabeth Henderson Jones lived their entire lives in Greene County, PA.

Family history suggests that James Jones' father was Robert Jones. Robert found in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Census living in Cumberland Townshio, Greene Co., PA. Also family legend is that Robert Jones had at least two brothers - Charles and Andrew, who moved to Columbiana Co., Ohio in the early 1800s. However, I have no confirmed evidence on these items of information.

It is likely that this Jones family came to the Greene Co., PA area from eastern PA, MD (Harford Co. area)' or VA in the mid- to late 1780s.

    Any help on this welcome!

    Jones in Georgia, USA ---

Have hit a brick wall with my Great Great Grandfather - David Lewis Jones (David Louis).  First appears in 1850 Putnam County, GA census with mother ANN (Head of House) and sister Lucy, Mary Elizabeth and brother James Judson.

The Jones next appear on the 1860 Harris County, GA census -- she was deeded land by an Arthur Farley in Harris County.

Have not been about to find the husband of ANN or ANN'S MAIDEN NAME OR FAMILY.  Have been unable to find any siblings of Ann's unknown Jones husband.

This Jones family is well documented in Harris and Muscogee County, GA and Lee County, AL after they moved west between 1850 and 1860.

David Lewis joined the 35th GA Infantry Company K on July 4, 1861 -- there was a Robert Issac Jones (son of William Clayton Jones) - who lived in Russell County, AL and also came to Harris County, GA on 7/4/1861 to join Company K with David Lewis -- they served together throughout the war -- and in the early 1900s - David Lewis witnessed Robert Issac's Civil War papers -- they were both living in the Phenix City, AL area.   Have to feel like they knew each other -- both were born aroun 1843 -- but Robert did grow up Russell County, AL - his father William Clayton was born in GA - and married in Monroe County, GA during the early 1830s.

This has consumed us for about 40 years now -- and so want to find David Lewis' father.

    Thanks All -

    Bob Jones
