This group is for everyone interested in family history and local history in the ancient County of Surrey, England, including south London areas of Southwark, Lambeth, Battersea, Camberwell, Bermondsey, Newington, Rotherhithe and Wandsworth.
My interest Surrey lies in the BOXALL name and variants. I began researching the name for my own family but as I accumulated more and more data I decided to turn this research into a One Name Study World Wide. Hence I registered with the Guild of One Name Studies. That being said I now have an extensive BOXALL database and would love to be of assistance to anyone who is looking for help. You will find I have also set up a BOXALL group.
I would like to join your Surrey Genealogy & Family History Group, look forward to hearing from other people researching in Surrey.
Kind regards
Barbara Lewis Mallyon
Veronica,
My Veness Tree has a Boxall connection. Charlotte BOXALL married Aaron VENESS 13 Nov 1814 Ewell, Surrey. Can supply further details of Aaron Veness if anyone is researching this line.

Researching RIDER and VENESS of Surrey
I have been researching a note written circa 1900. The note was purported to list several generations of my great-grandmother's ancestors.
After chasing the words for nearly three years, I believe I finally have the correct transcription. About 1900, Mary Ann (Annie) Curtis Somers wrote:
"My Grandma's Mother was the daughter of Brasier, Esq. of Cobham Court, Kent. Her married name was Russell. My Grandma's married name was Wicks and my mother's name was Curtis. Mr. John Russell, Mother's Uncle, was of Tillingdown Farm, Redhill, Kent."
The writer was the daughter of George Curtis and Mary Ann Brasier Wicks, and was born 8 May, 1851 in Croydon, Surrey and christened there at St John's 10 January, 1852. Her father was a builder (bricklayer) and the family lived in Croydon, Isle of Sheppey, London and Baltonsborough, Somerset.
Mary Ann Brasier (MAB) Wicks was the child of James Wicks, a groom and Mary (who by the above was Mary Russell). MAB was christened in Croydon at St. Johns 29 August, 1817 and died in London in 1892. James Wicks the father's birth has eluded me although there is a likely James christened 19 April, 1770 in Crowhurst, Kent. James died in Croydon 21 March, 1839 at 69.
Mary, the mother was living with MAB (nee Wicks) Curtis and her family in Croydon in 1841 and listed her age as 60 and profession as Needlewoman. In 1851 she was a housekeeper in Beddington, listing her birth city as Croydon and her age as 62. Mary died 11 August, 1858 in Croydon and her grand daughter reported the death, giving her age as 79.
I have found no other definite children for the Wicks couple but a James William Wickes christened at St John 31 May, 1807 is likely. I have not found a suitable marriage.
However, John Russell and Tillingdown Farm did exist! The lease for Tillingdown came into the hands of the Brasier family circa 1700 or before. It passed to James Russell (son of John Russell of Godstone and Mary Pike) in the late 1700's and to his son, John Russell upon the death of James in 1803. John married Mary Lipscombe in 1815 and died in 1829 without children. His extensive will seems to name all in the family: his wife, brothers, sisters and cousins (some of which were Brasier's and some of which were Searle's) but there is not a mention of a Mary Russell-Wicks. This is where the writings of Annie Somers can not be proven to be correct. Had John Russell been the Uncle of Annie's mother, MAB Wicks, Grandma Mary should have been a sister (or sister in law) to John of Tillingdown but she was not in the will and no christening to John's parents, James Russell and Ann Searle seems appropriate.
I am interested in learning more about the Brooker family who seem to have orginated around Horley Surrey before moving across the border to Sussex, East Grinstead area. If anyone has information, I would love to know more.
The Ricketts family appear in Banstead, Surrey about 1778. Robert Ricketts was described as being "of this parish" when he married Elizabeth Clark the 28th day of April 1778. This is the first mention of a Ricketts in this parish. Until into the 1900's some of the Ricketts remained in Banstead. I would like to know where Robert came from. He was born about 1757. Is anyone else researching this family or Banstead itself?
I have an indirect BOXALL in my Lemon tree. Jane BOXALL ch Sep 5, 1852 Bramley m. Richard LEMMON (ch Nov 7, 1847 Bramley) May 5, 1877 Hambledon. They subsequently moved to Battersea. If this links in with the Boxall researchers I can provide more details.
My Possee family lived in Lambeth. Would be interested to hear from anyone with connections to this name.
James Walter (born 1824) was a Police Sergeant in the Metropolitan Police. He had 3 sons from his first marriage to Priscilla Fullager. She died in 1851, along with their infant son. He remarried to Sarah Sutton and had a further 10 children! I am descended from John Thomas (from his first marriage).
My Surrey name interest is SKINNER.
They originated from Godstone/Horne and moved to Lambeth/Southwark.
Thomas SKINNER, born 1789 Godstone married Mary Daniels born 1789 Horne.
If you have any connection with Thomas and/or Mary I would love to hear from you.
Thank you.

Hi Everyone
I am John Laws, a member of the Guild of One Name Studies, researching LAW, LAWE, LAWES, LAWS, LAWSE World-Wide though my own LAWS family came from the Stepney/Bethnal Green/Mile End area and were mostley Mariners, and my earliest is Henry son of John & Mary Laws from Walworth, Surrey. fairly newly built when he was born in 1800.
I have collected a huge database The LAWS FAMILY REGISTER we have our own group on this site, our own website www.lawsfamilyregister.org.uk and also I moderate the LAW@Rootsweb & LAWS-UK@Rootsweb groups, Hope we can give mutual help
Hi all, just joined and will look through all the resources when I can (I have an almost one year old to keep me busy!) but quickly, am researching the following:
Cooper - from Lambeth
Ovington
Taylor - Specifically, Captain Edward Taylor of the 5th Militia
We are looking for baptism details for Phoebe MELLOWSHIP born circa 1800 allegedy in Newington Surrey. (http://www.stoneyburn.ca/Docklands/Mackay/Mellowship_Bio_01.php)
Is anyone able to distnguish the many Frederick Fishers in Lambeth/Southwark from each other. One, sometimes Frederick Charles, was a painter and lived intermittently at 5 St Masry's Lane/St Lambeth in or about the mid 1920s. You'd be amazed how many FCFs and still more FFs turn up in the same time period.
Looking for the parents of Christopher Buller and he was born circa 1763. He had his slop shop on Tooley Street in Bermondsey and lived on Bermondsey Street and Long Lane between 1795 and 1832. His first wife was Mary Beard and his second wife Jane . His son Henry Christopher Buller (born 30 January 1805 Bermondsey Street and baptized 24 Feb 1805 St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey) was my 2x great grandfather. Anyone researching the Buller family?
Good Morning list,
I have just registered with Genealogy Wise, after reading about it in Family History Monthly. I am therefore finding my feet, but thought joining the Lincs group, the county of my maternal ancestors, a good first move.
My father's family came from Reigate. For about 100 years, the family was in business as brick and pottery makers in Earlswood. Dad used to tell me that the family was from Mitcham. I have some evidence to that effect, but the combination of fairly scanty Mitcham records, and the surname BROWN, are making proving this out a tad difficult.
My grail is finding more about the brick-making business. I am getting there slowly, and have lots of information, some photographs, but no contact with the descendants of the brick-makers themselves.

Hi everyone, There is a fair amount of evidence that my surname (Loveland) was from Worplesdon in Surrey, though they went to the Colonies long ago. Is anyone else researching in the Worplesdon area?
Hi Joyce,
According to what I've researched so far, the Lovelands seem to have originated, as far as I've yet found, near Worplesdon. So far in my own research I've found information that matches the info on this page of the Loveland website:
"Loveland - Pre-1600 References, Early Geographical Distribution & Origins" http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~djmurphy/loveland/earlyref.htm
Not being in England, I am at a bit of a disadvantage in doing research on early documents, but I've been doing what I can from the States. I hope to take a research trip to England within the next few years.
How are you related to the Lovelands? Are you in England, the States or elsewhere? Please feel free to contact me off the board if you'd prefer.
I researched the Loveland name for someone else. I did not get back as early as your references, his came from Farnham, c1730. I found the Loveland website interesting.
Best wishes with your research.
Joyce
I think I am in the right place but not sure, My G-g-grandfather Edwin SAUNDERS, b 1842, moved to Wimbledon Surrey sometime between the 1861census and 1871, He left Dinton Buckinghamshire, where he was born, He was a brick layer and I have no idea why he left his little village except for the possibility of better work. He married Ann Mary Johnson 18 May 1871, they had several children and continued to live in Wimbledon Surrey, up until 1901 that I know of, I have the census' for 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. I would like to know when they died and where they might be buried.
Here is my website I have some of the information about this family there.. http://joni.tribalpages.com/
Any help or advice would be appriciated and any if you think you might be related to me please contact me.
Sincerely
Jo Saunders
This is great as I now have some idea where to look for info. My gfather was Charles Henry Louder. b. 8 Mar 1885 . His family lived in Redhill, Surrey in 1900 at 19 Grove Rd. When he joined the 2nd Dragroon Guards in 1900 he signed in Guildford, Surrey. I can find him on the 1901 Census at Aldershot Vet Acadmey but nothing else other that military papers until he married gmother in 1908 in Belleville On. His father's name was James Louder & his sister was Mrs. Gobill or Gohill living at 23 Lambert Cottage, St. John's Kings Ave. Redhill Surrey. Unfortuately his surname was changed to Louden at some time and he was always called Harry not Henry. If anyone has an idea how to look up the addresses I might be able to get info that way. help is greatly appreciated as this has been a long look
Hi Helen
Are you sure the Charles Henry LOUDER you mention in 1901 is yours?
He is enumerated as 20 years old in 1901, he appears aged 12 with father James and mother Eliza as LOWDER in 1891 and 2 in 1881
Birth reg
Name: Charles Henry Lowder
Year of Registration: 1879
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Reigate
County: Surrey
Volume: 2a
Page: 149
This would also fit with someone who enlisted in 1900 as an 1885 born would be to young
How do you arrive at the 1885 born LOUDER in Redhill ?
Looking at the GRO births, there are no Charles, Henry or Harry LOUDER or LOUDEN born in 1885
Nearest I can find is
Name: Harry Loudon
Year of Registration: 1883
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: St Saviour Southwark
County: London, Surrey

You have Hannah SAUNDERS b Dinton, Bucks 1845 on your tree. I'm pretty certain she married my Ancestor Henry William CHAPMAN in 1884.
Please contact me if you'd like to share info.
Thanks Nivard for responding. I haven't been tracking the family for awhile as I volunteer at the Legion and museum here after some idiot set fire to the archives. But yes my grandfather is the one listed at Aldershot in 1901. He lied about his age to enlist at Guildford. Harry was born at sea on a ship coming from Scotland to England and I am having trouble finding his birth certificate. I have his military papers from the UK and his Canadian Military papers for WWI. on each the date of birth is the same and he states Redhill, Surrey as his home. On the UK it states Isle of Wight as birthplace. It is possible that his name could be LOWDER as it has changed twice that I know of. He was LOUDER when in UK military but somehow it changed to LOUDEN (by his signature I can see how that happened) and also one time I believe it was LONDON. When he married my grandmother his name is listed as Charles Henry Louden but his name when he enlisted in Can. military was Harry Daniel Louden. He is a most interesting person and also mysterious too I think. But I do have others that are proving fascinating to find info on. If you can suggest how I get into Isle of Wight birth records or are they now in the UK archives? Thanks again Helen
Can anyone help me find an address of 1900-1919 in Redhill? Myself and a young computer wiz I know has been trying for some time. It's the address of my grandfathers sister, Mrs. Gobell or Gobill. She lived at 23 Lambert's Cottage, Kings Avenue, Redhill, Surrey. His father's , James Louder, address was 19 Grove Road, Redhill. There is also printed "St. John's" slightly to the right and in between the 2 addresses. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Helen Pust.
IOW records have been indexed by the IOW Family History Society. They are wonderful records and you can search nine years at a time. The birth records show mothers maiden name. Marriage records show both parties. Death records show age of deceased.
They all start in 1837 and go to 2000 at least.
Best wishes.

Had John Russell been the Uncle of Annie's mother, MAB Wicks, Grandma Mary should have been a sister (or sister in law) to John of Tillingdown but she was not in the will and no christening to John's parents, James Russell and Ann Searle seems appropriate.

IOW records have been indexed by the IOW Family History Society. They are wonderful records and you can search nine years at a time. The birth records show mothers maiden name. Marriage records show both parties. Death records show age of deceased.
They all start in 1837 and go to 2000 at least.
Best wishes.

Did your ancestor serve time in Surrey County Gaol? An online index to the register of prison deaths, 1798–1878, is now available on the Surrey History Centre website. The gaol in Horsemonger Lane, Newington, was Surrey’s principal prison and place of execution up to its closure in 1878, housing up to 300 criminals and debtors. http://bit.ly/xcnceC
