  • Charles Fleming

my paternal ancestry (Flemings) come from Mid Calder, West Lothian. I can trace back to the father of the three sons who came to Canada in 1835 (married in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, in 1825), but no further in spute of lots of family tradition. I can trace his wife, a McGregor, back several more generations. I can get the Flemings forward from marrying into the Bruces in the late 14th c, down to about the mid 16th century, but need to find the links from ther to the late 18th century.

  • John C. "JC" Snodgrass

I've been researching my family lines for years and have gone as far as I can here in America. Now onto Ireland and Scotland. In Scotland were in Ayr, Ayrshire, Snodgrass Village. So I'm still looking for any info in Scotland on the surname of Snodgrass and all of it's different spellings.
  • John Archer

    Hi Barbara,
My Scott family was Thomas 1800, George 1802, James 1810 who went to Tasmania. The others were Margaret, Agnes, Robert & Adam. Their parents were George and Elizabeth (or Betty) Pringle. Scott is a common name so I guess they are not your line.
  • Donald McIlhagga

Kathleen, I have just come across Ingram as a second name on my ONS. Elizabeth Ingram was born 7th Sep 1856 at Templepatrick, Co. Antrim, N. Ireland, to Henry McIlhaggo (or McIlhagga or McIlhaga) and Agnes (nee McMeekin). Do you perhaps have an Ingram who married a McMeekin or even a McDole (McDowel), Henry's mother's maiden name?
    Donald McIlhagga.

I'm interested in hearing for anyone with W&H families as it's useful to know where they were before and after their stay in the parish.

My Barnetts left Scotland in the 1600s and went to N. Ireland. The Kenney side were most likely there in the same time period.
William Barnett born 1609 in Scotland, is believed to be the earliest known ancestor from Scotland.
The name Vance is also allied with the Barnetts as well as Montgomery and Long.

  • John Graham

Hi, I need some help with a brick wall. I can follow my family back to a John Smith 1721-1784, he is in a grave in the Kirkconnel cemetery at Springkell, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfries, Scotland with his wife son and grandson and probably held the farm at Branteth which was part of the Springkell Estate. In the grave next to his is a grave with a Patrick Smith1677-1734, his wife and son and grandson. Looking at the dates for the birth of his son and his daughters (who are in a grave next door) my John Smith would fit neatly into the family however there does not appear to be any information of the birth of Patrick's children they are not in the births for Kirkpatrick Fleming and I cannot find anything on Scotlandspeople or Ancestry.com, I have some information which indicates that Patricks father was a John Smith and he had land at Waterbeck in the next parish (Middlebie), Does any one have any sugestions of how to find out about the family.

    Hello Scotland,
I am from the USA--looking for my relatives from Scotland--James Walker born March 8 1856 Father William, mother Margaret Wallace, married Agnes Robertson born Apri 18 1856 in Parish of Pencaitland County of Haddington
I had a friend "Mary" whomed got me a copy of their marriage license but it is difficult to understand---Are there any "Walker's or Robertson" still in Scotland
    Hoping to hear from you
    Sandy
  • Lesley Robertson

Quoting Sandy: "James Walker born March 8 1856 Father William, mother Margaret Wallace, married Agnes Robertson born Apri 18 1856 in Parish of Pencaitland County of Haddington I had a friend "Mary" whomed got me a copy of their marriage license but it is difficult to understand"
    .
The best way to find out more about these people is to go to Scotlands People and download (for a small fee) copies of their birth certificates. However, if you can put a scan of their marriage certificate on line and tell us where, we can take a look and see if we can read it - what is the problem? Is it faded or bad handwriting? It should give you both sets of parents.

  • Sarah Jayne Holmes

All my ancestors on my mothers side apart from 1 line (who moved to Scotland) all come from either Lanarkshire, mainly Larkhall, Stonehouse or Hamilton and surrounding areas or Ayrshire, there are family rumours that we do have some highlander ancestors on the McGregor and Bruce lines.
  • Lesley Robertson

Quoting Betty Oliver: "I would like to access the 1901 census for Glasgo (Milton district) for family forenames of Hamill living there at the time. Anyone help? "

The Ancestry transcription shows Walkinshaw (b abt 1865 Ayrshire) and wife Mary Jane (b abt 1866 Kircudbirght) in Govan plus Helen (b. abt 1872, she's Mrs Hamill) with 2 kids indexed as Harill (another Ancestry typo) - Abram age 5 and Catherine age 2.
There's also Lizzie Hamil (b abt 1877, Larank) and Annie Hamil (b. abt 1893 Glasgow). They're not in the same household.
If you go to Scotlands People you can download (for a small fee) the image of the census pages and see what's really there (as opposed to what Ancestry's transcribers saw).

In all the Scottish research I have done I have noticed a trend for the first-born to have the mothers maiden name for a middle name. I have used this before to push by a road block in cases where you only have a mothers first name.
