Hi Carole. I am a new member so I am still playing catch up and reading all I can find on this web page. My mothers family is from the Borders area of Scotland and there is a Rutherford mixed in somewhere. I am a Canadian living in Minnesota. My mothers family came to Winnipeg, Manitoba. My father is Irish, born in Belfast and his family also came to Winnipeg. Maybe we have a connection somewhere in this mixed bag of ancestors.

I believe I've traced my Rutherford line from Huron County, Ontario, Canada back one generation to Perthshire, Scotland. Scotland's early censuses (1841 - 1871) haven't been too helpful yet, but I'm hopeful that I will find evidence to support my thinking by checking other Scottish records. When James Rutherford first arrived in Canada in the early 1850's, he settled in Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario. He married Margaret Lee, an immigrant from Ireland (probably Northern Ireland) in 1855 in Oxford County, Ontario. After their second son was born in Hamilton, they moved west, ending up in Huron County, Ontario, where they lived out their lives. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know.
