Hi, Dennis , I have always thought that Elijah Powell was Levis father, Clay co Kentucky census 1820 has him in with the colored. Which is no surprise to me, My Powell family lived and raised on Turkey Creek in Knox co Kentucky. They were very dark people, but my great grandfather William Bill Powell was Blue. Do you know any more information on this Elijah Powell ? I know his daughter Mary Powell married a Hollingsworth and thats it.
I have Elijah Powell wife as Morning Wilson, she was native American Indian.
Most likely they treated Indian and colored the same. I was told at one time the powells could not go to school because they were thought to be black, but ware proven they were Indian.
Dwight, do you know a Bertie or Roger smith?
Well I have much more but would take too long to enter it here.
I have a site called picasa web site if you like to visit it and view the photos and documents. I would need your email to send the invite.
God Bless!
hi dennis, my email address is dwightandlouie@yahoo.com , my uncle Lawrence smith was a very good friend of your father Charles Powell and my father Lake Smith . Bertie Smith is my cousin.
Rev. Powell,
Hi there, We are decended from the Powells (spelled Powel some times) from Chicken Branch on Laurel Creek in Clay County Kentucky. The first Powell's in area were Elijah Powell and his son John and his family. We decend from the son - John. Elijah Powell, John Powell, John Lucas Powell (known as Preacher Tobe Powell), Lucian Powell, Clifford Powell, Dewey Ray Powell - my Husband.
I find John and Elijah living in Ashe County prior to Clay County Kentucky. It appears they Migrated with the Collins, Hollingsworth, and Reeds and married into those families. My father in-law tells me there was a distinct other family of Powells in Clay County that they did not condsider related.
