maternal gg grandparents Squire Lawrie (1821/22-1897) and Pauline Stevens Lawrie (1841-1928)-- slaves in St. Joseph, Missouri-- Squire was sold away from his first wife and family who are ,presently, unknown. Pauline was the daudhter of a slave mother Rosetta Stevens Jones (1819-d.after 1900) and a white father.Her 2 white half sisters and their white mother treated her very cruely and , out of hate and jealousy, cut her waist length hair up to her shoulders, Pauline served as a nurse,taking care of the children of the St. Joseph, Missouri elite.
