This is the Von der Burg Family Crest. I asked and someone colored it in according to the discription in Guy Funderburk's Book " Castles and Conquests" Additional Information on the coat of arms: The color Red denotes military fortitude and magnanimity(nobleness) also "Martyr's color" Silver signifies peace and serenity, Gold denotes generosity and elevation of mind. Black denotes constancy and shows a connection with nobility. The two castles, represent Stammburg and Schloss-Burg. The Raven is the symbol of alertness and watchfulness. Heraldry is an interesting topic in itself. You were never supposed to have a a color on color or metal on metal. So the Von der Burg crest is silver castle on red background and black raven on gold background. Colors and metals as well as the subjects of each portion all had meaning. A cross-quarted shield was usually the comibination of two different houses (families) - as in when a couple got married their family crests would be combined. There are all sorts of rules and regulations that are supposed to be followed. It was an ancient practice originally created so that warriors could recognize one another on a battlefield.
