LYNCH EALDON HAMMOND Bounty Passenger and Convict to Australia 1830/1840

My ancestor Rosanna Lynch (b c. 1822/3 Dublin Ireland par: Patrick Lynch, Plumber and Jane Merton) arrived in Australia as a Bounty Passenger aboard the 'Himalaya' in 1840 (Port Phillip ie Melbourne, Victoria) aged 20/21 - she may have had a birthday on board, and she may have overstated or understated her age).

She arrived in September 1840 and married Elijah Ealden in Melbourne on 16 November 1840 at St James Parish, Melbourne.

All efforts to locate Elijah Ealden have been fruitless so far - he doesn't appear anywhere else - no death registration, arrival or otherwise.

Rosina Ealden (nee Lynch) married James Hammond (b. c1812-19, Canterbury Kent England) in Brighton, Melbourne, Victoria on 7 Sept 1847. She was a widow and he was a widower - she listed her previous husband's date of death as 10 July 1857.

James and Rosina had a daughter - my great great grandmother, Rosina Hammond b. 27 February 1862 Brighton Victoria.

When Rosina died 9 Sept 1892 aged 68 at Brighton Victoria, her death certificate lists two marriages and a child from each - Marion aged 39 and Rosina aged 30. However it lists her first husband as John Phillips.

I found a James Ealden who was a convict in NSW (Victoria was part of NSW until 1852) who arrived aboard 'Lady Harewood' in 1831, having been transported 'for life' from Kent England in 1830. He was tried at the midsummer Kent QS along with a Mary Ann Ealden who was found not guilty of receiving stolen goods (presumably those stolen by James).

I have not been able to locate a death entry for Elijah Ealden or James Ealden. James Ealden appears in the 1841 Census in Paramatta NSW, but received a conditional pardon shortly afterwards and disappears from the record after that.

I also have been unable to locate a birth of Marion with any of the possible surnames - Lynch, Hammond, Ealden or Phillips. What i have found is a death entry in the right year for a James Lynch, and a birth entry for a Mary J Lynch also in the right year. I havent purchased certificates yet.

I'm interested in anything anyone might have to shed light on some of this - even if its anecdotes of similar stories.

Hi Michelle

Interestingly there is a Eliyah Ealdon  taken before the court June 1823 Middlesex , although he

was acquitted, I thought worth mentioning.

It may be worth considering that Elijah may not have been deceased when Rosian remarried, it would not be the first time this has happened, of course there may be another explanation. I noticed the dates were wrong above stating that Rosinas husband died 10 years after she remarried, was that just a typo?

I located this on freebmd            10781/1892      EILDON ELIJAH UNKNOWN UNKNOWN PARRAMATTA   there parents were unknown.

I know this may not be exactly what you want to see, and that also it may not be the right one, but you may consider it worth investigating?

I would be delighted if it turns out the right person for you.

kindest regards

Sharon

Hi Sharon

Thank you so much for  your reply and your interest!  Yes it was a typo re: the remarriage date - Rosina and James Hammond were married in 1857 NOT 1847, and the date of death of her first husband was given as July 1957.

The Eliyah Ealdon before the court in June 1823 COULD be Elijah.  Thank you for that - I'll go have a look. Elijah Ealden/Ealdon/Eilddon etc seem to be fairly common in England, but not in New South Wales :)

I'll also check out the Eildon Elijah in Parramatta - that actually could be him too... as you say, he may not have actually died before Rosina remarried.

Have you had a look at my blog posts about this mystery?  If not they are at michellesheritage.wordpress.com if you are interested.  I'll keep updating as I find things.

Doesn't help that his parents are unknown though, does it?

Thanks again for your interest and help.

Michelle

You may be interested in the attached file, if the same person it seems he attended court a few

times before  being transported

ahhh, yes, I have seen this - I have located a tasmanian convict who I think is the James Hammond that Rosina married - and this is him.  I haven't conclusively linked the convict James Hammond to the one who married Rosina, but the dates all seem to match fairly closely.

If Rosina DID marry an ex-convict it lends credibility to Elijah also possibly being a convict.  There is also the James Ealden convict who came from the same area as James Hammond (they may have known each other previously).  If Elijah and James Ealden are the same person (and this is possible, but again not conclusive and not as likely as the James Hammond / James Hammond link), it's possible that they all knew each other before Rosina and James Hammond married.

It's fairly fascinating, but still all conjecture at the moment.  The James Hammond who seems to have been in and out of prison in England before being transported does look like he might have been my great great great grandfather though.

Thanks again for your help.  I'd be really interested to see anything else you turn up!
