If anyone else is descended from the Fear family of Ashwick, Somerset, then I would be pleased to hear from you. I trace my family back to George Fear of Ashwick 1733-1766 via his son James 1755 - 1824, William 1797 -1852, Eli 1828 - 1913, and Frederick 1857 - 1941. My family tree is on Ancestry.co.uk if anyone would like to check it there.

Tam,

I am researching the FEARS family and have really just started my search.  I am a direct descendant of James W. Fears, Sr.  He was born a free man of color on November 3, 1795 in Prince Edward County, VA.  He was married to Rebecca Hulda Dungey.  I am hoping to now go back and fill in some gaps prior to this James.  Shortly after marrying and having their first child, James moved the family to Henry County, IN.  According to the article "Fears Family of Henry County", it is speculated that James was the son of Pleasant or Absolem Fears/Phears, both Caucasian men.  I am hoping to discover if there is a connection between James W. Fears and the following individuals:

Absolem Fears/Phears

Pleasant Fears/Phears

James B. Fears (1723 - 1804)

James Fear (1685 - 1741)

Thomas Fear (1630 - ?)

I keep seeing conflicting information especially regarding the dates of birth, so the information above is not confirmed.  The most interesting information on James W. Fears is taken from the Book of Registers of Free Negroes and Mulattoes in 1850, which is filed in the Clerk's Office of Charlotte County, VA.  This register lists him as being "bright mulatto".  Also, the 1850 census of Charlotte County, VA., describes James as being a mulatto.  Is any of this covered in the FEAR Single Name Society archives?

I am married into the Phears line descended from Absalom and Pleasant and William Henry Phears, which means my husband and his sisters are distant relatives of Dee Ann Kilbourn. I'm very interested in any information related to the Fear family, especially anything new that turns up in England or Virginia.

Hi,

Have not logged on in a while - a lot going on w/my kids this summer.... That is VERY interesting! My grandmother had told me the Fears/Phears were Pittsylvania Dutch, so I assumed they were of Germanic heritage. None of us have been able to figure out why they changed the spelling of their name to Phears when they left MO to move to TX, but from then on, Absalom and all of his children spelled it Phears. What is involved with joining the society? I would love to have more information on this line!

I was under the the impression it was referring to the state or providence of Hannover. Thank you

Hi Sandy,

We have no references to the surname 'FURCHT' in our archives, but thee were a number of 'FEARs' in Luzerne Co PA.

You say he was born in Hannover, Germany, but then say you are unable to identify the town he was from. Hanover is a large city in central Germany

I am looking for information on my greatgreatgrandfather. His surname is Furcht. The name translates to Fear in english. He was born Johann Audear Frederich Furcht in Hannover Germany on Dec 7th 1824. He arrived in the US on June 28th 1846. His wife was also from Germany, I have only her first name Louisa. He fought twice in the Civil War under the names Frederick Furscht and Frederick Furcht. His pension show him as Fritz Furcht and his grave show Frederick Forrest. He resided first in Luzerne CO PA and later Bradford Co PA.

I am unable to locate a town in Germany he was from and no records I find on him gives a clue. Would by chance you have the name Furcht in your files?

Hi Dee,
I have checked the FEAR Single Name Society archives and we have, in deed researched your line. The family name was originally FEAR and they seem to have changed it to FEARS after the death of a James FEAR in 1685. Strange they should have changed it again later to PHEARS

The research we have runs back to a John FEAR who was born in England around 1640 and his wife Agnes, but we do not as yet have a place of birth for him in England nor any more information about him. We have extensive details about this family (all available from the Society free of charge to researchers), but I cannot find your Thomas FEARS. The nearest we have is Thomas FEARS of Virginia baptised in 1761. However he seems to be too young to be the father of Pleasant FEARS (b1773). Nevertheless, Thomas may not have been a baby when he was baptised so it could be the correct Thomas. We have no information regarding Thomas, except that he had issue

You say "Not really sure what you mean by "see if you have researched your line". I have indeed researched my line." However, the research goes on as however far you get back there is always your earliest members father to find.

I will look into out archives to see if we have any data on that family which may help you get further back, or to see if anyone is reaserching the same line who you may be able to help

Hi,

Not really sure what you mean by "see if you have researched your line". I have indeed researched my line. My great-grandfather was William Henry Phears of Washington & Lee Counties, TX. His father was Pleasant Phears, born in Pike County, MO, moved to TX in 1840's. His father was Absalom Fears, born in 1797 in Prince Edward County, VA, migrated with HIS father, Pleasant Fears born in 1773 in Pittsylvania County, VA to Missouri as a young boy. Pleasant's father was Thomas Fears, who served in the Army as a Soldier during the American Revolution and received a bounty land grant as a result of his service. A distant cousin told me he traced our Fears line back to the 1600's and I believe he said that ancestor lived in VA, also, but did not have much more and did not know from what country our ancestors came here. My g-g-g grandfather Absalom changed the spelling from Fears to Phears when they left MO to move to TX - they are listed in the 1820 & 1830 MO census as Fears, but in 1850, 1860 and so on - they all spelled it Phears.......
