African Ancestored Genealogy

Dedicated to all things African Ancestored!

I like the inclusiveness of the term; it includes North America, South America; in fact the entire globe!

Another way of expressing this is the African Diaspora

From Wikipedia:

African diaspora; One of the largest diasporas of pre-modern times was the African Diaspora, which began at the beginning of the 16th century. During the Atlantic Slave Trade, twenty million people from West, West-Central and South-east Africa were transported to the Western Hemisphere as slaves.

This population and their descendants were major influences on the culture of English, French, Portuguese and Spanish New World colonies. The Arab slave trade also transported Africans from the continent, although the effect of the Diaspora to the east is more subtle.

It is my hope that you will participate in the discussions, contribute information, and basically get in where you fit in!

Yea your right about the certificate. If they were in AR. in 1900 unless he went back to MS. and that might be why my grandmother ended up staying with a cousin, maybe he died in AR. just so many unanswered questions. How do I find any living relatives?

I use Vitalchek.com. You can go to the website and see if you feel comfortable using them; I have never had any problems. http://www.vitalchek.com

In 1880, his father was born in SC, and mother in MS; then in the 1900 census, it's just the opposite..so could be something there. If you know what statehe died in you should definitely check for a death certificate. Depending on when that state started keeping vital records there could be one. Don't rule it out before you check.

Sandra,

My father was born in 1913 Brinkley, Monroe Co. Ar. My grandmother in 1900 was living with her parents, but in 1910 she was living with a cousin, in 1920 she and my father was living together with some other people (lodgers) 1930 she was married to a Bert C. Cammon, she died in 1941, he Bert in 1958 in Ca. So my problem is to on this is what happened to my fathers father. I'm just lost here. I am going to be ordering my grandmothers death cert. here soon, but where is a good place to order from that is safe online.

Sandra,

No I haven't tried getting a death certificate for him, I thought because of his birth year that there might not be one. I wouldn't even know how to rule him out or know if that is him. he was living with Anthony Lomax, age 42 b. SC/SC/SC. also listed are Bedford age 16 son MS/SC/MS, Edmund age 15, Alice age 14, and War Leneir age 13 . More, Belle age 22 MS, Anna Davis age 2 MS. Jane Watson age 24 AL. Emmaline Watson age 4 MS. The only thing I know for sure is that my Grandmother was born in Como, Panola Co. MS. I don't even know what happened to my grandfather General Bryant.

Willette,

Have you tried to locate a death certificate for your great grandfather? That might give you his parents if you could locate it. I see the Lomax surname in MS, but it's kind of difficult to know who I'm looking at w/o more info to go on. Did he have any brother's or siisters that you know of? You need something to give a clue of who/where to look in MS. I feel your frustration. It's hard when you don't have much to go on. Did you try following up on the person you found in the 1880 census to rule him in or out as a possibility for your great grandfather? Who was this person living with in 1880? You could try looking for some of those people in the 1870 census. You may have already tried all of thiese, but thought I'd mention them just in case.

Hi Sandra
No I have no clue as to what his parents names are. My father never talked about any of his family, I was always told that he could not have a relationship with his family because he was with a white woman, now I don't know if his frist wife was white, my mom had said that she was Chinese, but my mom was white, it was the same with her family she knew that she could not go back home after meeting my father, I found her side about 1994, got intouch with some of them and still do till this day and that is what I would like to do on my fathers side. his father from the 1900 census says that he was from MS and mother from SC. I had a ancestry account, I do have 3 family trees on there 1 private and 2 not, under Lomax and Wilson.

Thanks
Willette

Willette,
If your great grandfather was born abt 1864 he was probably enslaved, and his parents also. (Unless you have evidence that they were free persons of color..you don't say that so I'm guessing no). You need to locate them in the 1870 census in the location you think they were mostly likely living at that time. Your great grandfather would have been abt 6yrs old so he would mostly likely be living with his parents or other relatives. You don't mention his parents names; do you have that info? I'm sure you looked on Ancestry, but I will give it a go and see what I come up with.

Good Luck!

Hi everyone,
Question, how do you go by finding out if your ancestors were slaves or not, I have been trying to find info on my great grandfather and his family for awhile and just don't know how to, I traced my great grandfather to the 1900 census for Brinkley, Monroe Co. Arkansas but I can't find anything before then, his name is Lenn Lowmax b. Mar 1864 in MS. married Filamensia ? b. Feb 1871 in MS. they were married for 13 yrs. children are Josh Lowmax b. Feb 1888 in MS. Edream Lomax b. Jan 1890 in Como, Panola Co. MS. (she is my grandmother) Adelar b. Mar 1882 in MS. Arel D. b. Jun 1894 in MS. There is a War Leneir Lomax in the 1880 census of Panola Co. MS. I just don't know if that is the Lenn i'm looking for. Iv'e posted just about everywhereand don't get no response, i'm also looking for living relatives because we never met anyone on this side of the family. So any help would be greatly welcomed.

Thanks
Willette
