Please excuse the poor typing in my post about the the "shaking leaf" I'm using a new keyboard that is a little different.

I wonder about the merge process for censuses when "show relatives" is available. It is not always. However, my question is about listed relatives with different spellings from the one in my tree. Sometimes, I can type in my names, and those will "go" into the tree, other times, the tree wizards automatically makes a new person, when it is the same person. Then I have to delete them, and individually apply the record.

the "shaking leaf" appears from other trees, but I am the one who entered the Tata originally. That's kind of odd, as I have a couple of trees on Ancecstry, and the "shaking leaf" appears between my own trees and no one else's! Or other members who had a mutual relative that stopped cold. I entered more data into my own tree I found, and then their tree accepts it, so ok, but then I get the "shaking leaf" again--from "their" trees for my original entry! I know of three families where I was the one who found the data, and then Presto, it's on the other trees. I don't mind that, but sometimes I make mistakes, even though I try to add my sources. Might be nice if each tree was listed as a source when the data is imported by the "shaking leaf" wizard. If it already is, where would that be found on the web page?

I found out the FamilyTree maker 2009 has some great compatibility to Ancestry so i bought it. Yet, something made me hold off upgrading from my 2005 until i called Ancestry. I found out that in FTM 2009 you can take your tree from Ancestry and fix it in FTM 2009, and put it back, however, you lose all the stories and photos that were on it. Now, 2010 Family Tree maker is coming out in a few weeks, and they have fixed that flaw so, not only can you go in and delete

The Family Tree Maker Fan Group, here at Genealogy Wise has an RSS feed from a blogger talking about this capability in Version 2009 and what appears to be in Version 2010 when it is released.

Hope that helps,

Russ

Family Tree maker allows you to add an AKA (also Known AS) this allows you to put in alias' or even a knick name. This would allow you to put the Jnr in.

I tend to agree with Joyce, however if I have proof that a person used Jr. as a nickname, I will also add that. The proof may be in the form of a letter, a newspaper, a family Bible, or similar type of document.

Dan, if I don't know for sure if it is legal or not I do not add it. My son was a Jr and it was on his birth certificate so I add it, but on my husband Sr was not a legally on his so I did not use it.

In Ancestry when adding a father & son with the same name do I put Jr with the son's name ? What if you don't know if Jr was part of the son's legal name ?

One of the things I like about the "old search" of Ancestry is that it does not "anticipate" my query. Let me explain. I am looking for someone named Gertrude Mary Beard. I found her this way: Gertrude can be misspelled as Lertrude, Sertrude. So I search on those kinds of errors. Also, the "trude" part can be turde lerde, and so on. If you search on such misspellings, there are plenty of them to provide a list of candidates for "my" Gertrude. Given such errors are so common, I like being able to search on them. Try it out see how many Sertrude and Lertrudes there are. The mispelling arises from mistranscriptions. Here's the thing about Ancestry. They will incorporate a correction if they feel it is justified, into the search. Every "repair" this way counts. But in other websites, the correction is not available, of course. When I search, and find Gertrudes that may match, I offer the correct spelling of the name so somebody else can find "their" Gertrude. This is a huge plus of the Ancestry site.
