Hi, Renate. I know exactly what you mean; it seems after a certain point Ancestry doesn't help much when it come to African American research. It's frustrating. But, I continue to renew my subscribtion. I would not, however, upgrade to a World subscription, for just the reasons you mention. That said, if you can continue to subscribe do so.

Your research never ends; you will always uncover new ancestors you need to research, and there is always the possibily of making a new connection with another researcher, if your tree is public. I just made a connection with some who just recently started researching on Ancestry. Often times, I go for months finding nothing new, the one day BAM, there it is. I either discover a connection in another member's tree, or I find that elusive ancestor in some record with the name spelled so wrong it's no wonder I did not see it before.
As an African American researcher there are so many reasons to keep your research going, and to keep as many avenues open as possible.

Have you started into your slave ancestral research yet? If you have, then you know in order to find your enslaved ancestors it is absolutely necessary to research the slave owners' family. Ancestry is a good resource for beginning this aspect of your research.

Just my 2 cents worth. Sandra

That's why it good to save what ever you find as a image or a pdf to your harddrive and copy the work into your program of choice. I've run into the same situation where I've let my subscription lapse and no longer had access to something I'd like to look at again. Its an great site and I love what it does but I wish it would ask if I would like to add a copy to FTM. Create an image and auto download to my FTM data base.

Barbara, thanks for your offer. Can you, or anyone, tell me what kinds of things you might be able to find about African American ancestors on the World Subscription? I've always kind of figured there wouldn't be anything.
Also, kind of along that note.... I've always felt a bit "robbed" as an AA researcher by Ancestry's fees? The amount of information we can find on our formerly enslaved ancestors on the site is limited. Once we've got it - we've got it. But in order to continue to have access to our tree, or to add the occasional new bit of information, we must maintain the subscription. Also, even though I maintain my tree on another site also (tribalpages.com), all of my citings are on the A.com site. I go for months and months at a time without ever getting anything new from my searches on ancestry, yet I still have to pay. Does anyone else feel this way? Any suggestions?

I have an Ancestry Tree with over 70,000 people, over 500 who are Revolutionary War Patriots. I have a number of people who are contributors. I also am an editor or contributor to over 15 other trees.

Hello everyone!

I have multiple trees on Ancestry.com, but I have privatized them all. My ancestry includes: Rodgers, Brewster, Brandon, Campbell, Sheffler, DeVoe, Jones, West, Nelson, McPheeters, Edwards, Pearson, Pruitt, Doyle and more!

I have been with ancestry.com off and on for about ten years. (Only due to finances, otherwise I would have stayed with them.)

I've been doing my own genealogy research for @20 years, and have begun helping some distant cousins over the past ten years or so. Right now, I am trying to learn more about genealogy standards, citation, resources, etc.

I use ancestry family tree, 1. Because my children created a my family.com site and the tree is for them. 2. It makes for wonderful contacts when you make it a public tree.

Debbie, the best thing about Legacy is that the trimmed down version is free. I switched from Family Tree Maker at least 10 years ago because photos were included and not linked. This really bloated the file. Built in sourcing templates, a neat charting program, research guidance and the ability to customize the way I want it. Free updates between major versions, support from other users as well as the company. Gotta love it. Download the free version and check it out.

I've been using Ancestry.com for a little over a year. I tried The Master Genealogist and found it user-hostile. (I was lost, really!) I also use Family Tree Maker, find it great for organizing and correcting errors on a tree created in Ancestry. Another great resource for documents is Footnote.com. I've found old newspaper clippings about my grandmother and her amateur theatricals staged for local benefits, Civil War documents about my great grandfather, and other items not on Ancestry. Then there's the ever popular Google News Archives...

Hi, I have been a member of ancestry.com for so long I don't remember when I joined sut due to budget it is only for the US. I have three public trees online with them: Garrott Family of Western Kentucky, Joyce Family of Trigg County, KY and my Long Lost Smith Family. I have used Family Tree Maker longer than that, I also like it. Years ago I was about ready to go to another program and then they made changes to improve it so I stuck it out. I have wondered though if some of the other programs would be better, but I am one who doesn't do change very well.
