Thank you Cindy
Hi Terri - The cost of the application is $105. $75 is the application fee and $30.00 for your national dues for one year. You will need to talk to the chapter registrar and find out what the chapter and state dues are as these will need to be paid when your application is approved at the National Board of Management meeting.
If I could, I would like to comment about using information from the Internet for applications. While information posted on any site such as "John Smith born in 1850 is the son of David H. and Mary Jones Smith" would not be acceptable as documentation, DAR does accept images of documentations from sites such as Ancestry dot com. Recently I used images on Ancestry's site from the ship's passenger list and passport applications databases for an analysis and did not have to obtain a paper copy of the original document.
I agree with Tyler Hancock - there are many, many Daughters to lend you a hand with your application
What does it cost to submit an application?
I also just saw that ancestry.com is partnering with the Pensylvania Archives to put PA records on their site.
True, the DAR worksheet does not have to be intimidating. It is just your direct line back to your ancestor. Take it one generation at a time from yourself. Fill in birth, marriage, death dates and places, try and use primary source documentation from the county records, or census and pension records.
Please do not use internet information except as a guide to take you to the source document. "Family Data collection" is not a source.
Just read on Fold3/formerly Footnote that their African American records are free this month in Feb due to Black History month. Its a great site for Civil War Widow pensions, and Rev War Pension records.
Also the WWI and WWII enlistment and draft records are a big help with ages and locations.
Hi Connie,
I'm in a Colorado DAR Chapter, & am one of the State Chairs for Volunteer Genealogists (my job is to teach people how to do apps). I agree with TCallahan. I would not wait; I would put in both your apps at the same time.
Lineage is the main thing to prove for DAR. We like to have dates of birth, death & marriage, along with places, but if one is left out, not a problem.
Tyler
True,
That's great that you just got your DAR application. Keep in mind that there are lots of people in the DAR who are there to help you with your application. It shouldn't be an intimidating process because you shouldn't be left alone to complete it all by yourself. There are committees and everything to help you out.
Obviously, there are some things that only you can do, such as get the information on the first few generations, and more, but you shouldn't have to type up the app by yourself.
If there isn't anyone who can help you in the chapter you are looking to join, let me know and I'll get you connected with someone. :-)
Tyler
Connie, there is no reason to wait for your mother's application, unless you want to make sure she's verified before you pay your application and membership fees. Part of that is non-refundable if the application is not verfied. If you think it is pretty much a done deal, as in someone else in your family has joined, then you can confidently join at the same time.
Don't forget to check out the genealogical research database on the DAR website. You can look at everyone who's joined under your patriot and see which one is the closest match. That can help the registrar at your prospective chapter order the application that will be best to cut down on the work you'll need to do.
I just received my Application for DAR and it's on my Maternal side. I am in the process of collecting data. It's a very intimidating application. I will be hopefully joining the one here in KY, even tho my Patriot is from PA where I was born and raised, his name is Nicholaus Barrick. All this information is Great!
