Henry Stark Ives - Henry Stark Ives was the Patriarch of our Aspen Family, was born to Edward E. IVES and Ann IVES on February 10th 1876 in Plymouth, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania. His father being a coal miner in Pennsylvania, Henry followed suit, learning the trade in his mid to late teens. At the first call for volunteers for the Spanish American War, Henry enlisted in Company D, 13th Regiment, Infantry, Pennsylvania Volunteers. After his faithful and honorary service in the militia, Henry moved west to Colorado, briefly stopping in Denver before settling in the mountain town of Aspen, in 1900. Henry's first position was that of engineer at the famous Hotel Jerome in Aspen. Henry married Margaret Graham in 1903, and had three children, daughters Helen and Edna Ives, and son Arthur Ives. In later years, Henry worked in the silver mines in Pitkin County, and after having ill health, became a janitor at the Washington School in Aspen, working for six years before passing on April 27th 1929.
