I had signed up to be a volunteer to take pictures for the cemeteries in my town but recently had to stop due to taking care of my mother with early stages of alzheimers(sp?) and my husband who is not in the best of health recently. I really enjoyed helping people out and was lucky to find some one in Mass. to take pictures of my ancestors tombstone. Hopefully someday soon I will be able to volunteer again. Keep up the good work volunteers. It means alot for us who cannot travel due to various reasons.

Weird happening. I discovered an ancestor who had been a prominent businessman and x-mayor of Louisville, Ky in the 1800's. I found references that he was buried at Cave Hill cemetery "next to his wife." Cemetery records confirmed the plot location. A nice lady in Louisville answered my FaG request for a photo. She knew the cemetery well and went over to take the photo. She found the wife, but no x-mayor's stone. Well, I did a little more research and found yet another ancestor, same last name who also was an x-mayor of Louisville in the 1800's and buried at same cemetery. This was really getting strange and got stranger still when the nice lady went back to get photo of this newly discovered x-mayor only to find his stone was missing too.

Stacy, I don't believe there are many members in VA who go around taking pictures, however, I live in Richmond, VA so if there is a grave you need a pic of, let me know.

I love this group name and instantly joined. I recently took on the task of adding more than 250 grave marker photos at a cemetery in St. Paul simply because they were missing from the entries. I love F-A-G!

Hi everyone. I love FAG site. Love to take pictures for people who can't get them for themselves. What I am wondering is what is the best tool to use to make old stones more readable without damaging the stones. Where I take most of my photo is in an area where most of the cemeteries are not active any longer. Lot of the stones are late 1800 and early 1900's. Any help would be appreciated. LOVE FAG

I haven’t even said hi yet, so I’ll do that now. Hi everyone, I’m Jenn from CSGS, I’m adore FindAGrave.com!
I wanted to respond to the question about GPS - In Canada where we do most of our photos, there actually are some places in the north that don't have Google earth images yet at any percentage of visibility, and there are roads that I’m not even sure what their names are! We have several small, out of the way cemeteries where nothing but a gps will work, but because we work as a team we didn’t want to have to outfit all our vehicles in gps units – Although eventually I fear that’s the way things will go, Progress stops for no one and all that rot – Anyways we recently were given a great solution for about $50 US. It’s a gps key that fits right into your laptop and will give you coordinates in the middle of cattle fields if you need them. I think the one we’re using is called Earthmate, but you’d have to do your consumer research and find out what’s available to you. Good luck with finding a working solution!

To enter map coordinates into FAG you need to convert to a decimal. You can do that here: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html

I've used google earth to find coordinates of a grave. No need to invest in a GPS for this. Find your cemetery, keep clicking the + slider to make it big, find your stone and look at bottom left of screen. Write down coordinates and convert to decimal.
