Using Old Newspapers for Genealogy
Newspapers are an essential tool for genealogists. Of course they contain obituaries that provide important family information, but there are news and feature articles and even advertising that may mention your family.
There are free historical resources for old newspaper articles in US online, covering much of U.S. history -- from the 18th to the 21st century. One place to find them -- well organized by state -- is the National, State & Local Newspaper Archives. You'll find links to resources scattered all over the Web.

One good resource is Chronicling America:

I have used the View side as well as the Find section, and I have been able to locate what newspapers were available for the time period I am working on, and where the archived back issues may be located. It also helps to find out what issues aren't available.

I have used newspapers extensively in researching an actor/wild west performer circa 1850-1924, because I can only locate him on the census in 1910 and 1920. :)
