LOL. Feathers not even ruffled, lass, but thanks for your concern.
MY concern remains the same: prevent loss of effort, time and data. I scan my original documents for another backup. Perhaps I'm too obsessive in keeping my files organized and backed up, but I haven't lost anything, yet.

Well, you can back up however often you feel it is necessary. I'm not obsessive about it because I have hard copy files of everything. My electronic files are just a back up to my hard copy files.
However, I make sure the CDs, flash drives, etc are backed up often enough that I don't have to re enter tons of data if it is lost.
You can back yours up whenever you want. My post was just a suggestion; not a command. You can smooth your feathers.
The idea is to find out why and how to back it up and choose what's appropriate for your situation.

Back up "every coupla years"?? I would not wish to lose even ONE year of work. I recommend weekly backups. Unless even a week's worth is going to be devastating. You can backup your data to Mozy or Carbonite online. Heck, you can even set them to do it live and in the background.
Don't wait YEARS to backup your valuable data. Please!

For another suggestion: how about a chat on GEDCOMS. Does everyone know what this is and why we use it and how to use it?
Most genealogy programs now export GEDCOMS but all genealogy programs are different in how they export and where they export to so you can find that file.

A "genealogy software" discussion would be good for beginners. I know that I changed software abt 4 times when I began. The first was "The Master Genealogist". I nearly pulled my hair out and never really learned it. Advice: start with simple software like Family History Library's free PAF and there are others. You can always import a GEDCOM into more sopisticated software later if that's what you would want to do.
The second: "computer back up systems" would be good. I know that many people are not backing up their files out of their genealogy programs and I know some who have lost the research they had done and given up on the whole thing. The thing is that many people don't understand why or how to back up their data files.
It's not difficult to back up your data to CDs, flash drives or external hard drives and distribute them to people you trust and even into your safe deposit box. Then, update them every coupla years.
These are just two suggestions for using technology in genealogy. Maybe someone else has some ideas. This is an area that warrants discussions since nearly all of us now use electronic technology to do research or record what research we have done.

Gena, I would be interested in someone with great experience in the area to do a chat on using technology in genealogy. I am lost when it comes to software to use, etc. I am sure this would be the type of topic that needs to be broken up into sections, but I am very interested in this type of chat.
