Catherine - Also Joseph Leo Melanson was born 23 Mar 1908 in Fitchburg, MA [v. 576, p. 304] and this record reports his parents as Joseph Melanson and Catherine O'Malley, both born Canada.

The birth record for a Mary Marquerite Alma Melanson is recorded in 1909 in Fitchburg [v, 564, p. 306] but the image is unavailable at the moment through the NEHGS website.

Hi Catherine - The family of Joseph and Katherine Melanson appear in the 1910 US Census - Massachusetts - Worcester Co. - Fitchburg Ward 2 - District 1731 - Page 1. They are living at 455 Beech Street which was a two-family house. The info given is . . . Joseph P. Melancon, age 24, married 5 years, born Canada French as were both his parents, immigrated 1903, alien (i.e. not naturalized), speaks English, occupation - Weaver, unemployed as of 15 Apr 1910 and had been out of work for 13 weeks in 1909, rented the home, and could read and write. His wife, Katherine Melancon, age 21, married 5 years, also gives her nationality/birthplace as Canada French as well as both of her parents, immigrated 1902, Alien status, speaks English but does not read or write. Both Joseph and Katherine reported having had 3 children but 2 still living. These 2 children are given as a son, Joseph Leo, age 2, born Massachusetts, and Mary Alma, age 9/12 (as of 15 Apr 1910 which would provide a birth month of August), also born Massachusetts.

Mass Vital Records, 1841-1910, vol. 556, pg. 296, gives the marriage in Fitchburg, MA on 3 Jul 1905 of Joseph D. Melanson, age 20, of Fitchburg, Occupation: Weaver, born Fitchburg, parents - Peter and Cecile Melanson. to Catherine Malley, age 17, of Fitchburg, Occupation: Twister, born Chatham, Mass., parents - Charles and Bridget (Thomas) Malley. Penciled into the type-written record above Joseph's information are the words "parents dead." Penciled into the same record below Catherine's age are the words "Mother's consent." They were married by C. Triquet, Priest, Fitchburg.

Does this help?

I'm wondering if there are any particular topics about Massachusetts ancestry that anyone would like to discuss?

I have a few ancestors in Mass history no.1 was Sampson Mason a shoemaker the eaarliest known record of him in New England is dated 1649. According to a history of the Baptists in America, "Sampson Mason was a soldier in Cromwell's Army and he came to America upon the turn of the times in England. On March 9,1650/51 he purchased a house and a lot in Dorchester,Mass. He moved to Rehoboth some time before Dec 9n1657. He was one of the original proprietors when the town of Swansea was incorporated on March 5 1668. He died in 1676. His widow was Mary Butterworth Mason she died in Aug of 1714. The other line in Mass was the William Salisbury family . On June 23, 1675, John Salisbury, the 20 yr old son of William, fired the first shot of King Philips War, when he mortally wounded an Indian who was pilfering his house. The next day, the Indians returned, shot and killed William Salisbury, His wife not far off, went back......" The Indiand scalped her and killed both William and son. Susannah apparently survived. She was admitted to Dorchester, Mass church on April 7,1677 and died about Nov.11,1684. William and Susannah George Salisbury's Daughter Susannah Salisbury was born April 27,1662 in Boston Mass, Married Thomas Seaman in March 168 probabaly in Swansea Mass. Thomas Seaman was born about 1662. Thomas was called the "School Master" of Swansea.

Acoreanos has many historic photos uploaded. We also have many Azoreans looking to research their ancestry that immigrated through Massachusetts from the Azores. Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks, Lisa! I especially enjoyed the New England_1888 text (in their directory "Census") which is a book titled "Twenty Thousand Rich New Englanders." I hadn't seen that before but it certainly provides a different perspective on that time period and the area. There's no information about who/what this group is sponsoring this site. Do you know anymore about them and their collection?
