JANE EBREY, daughter of Thomas and Anne Ebrey, Shropshire
Previous family research indicates that Jane Ebrey was born in 1839 and baptized in Hodnet, a village north of Shrewsbury in Shropshire, England. Her parents are said to be Thomas and Anne Ebrey. Unfortunately there is no IGI record for her birth or baptism for Hodnet or nearby Prees where the Ebrey family was well known. It appears that her parents died when she was young as she was in service with relatives in 1851 [census] and in 1861 [census] kept house for her Uncle Robert Ebrey and his two sons, both times in Prees.
I do know Robert Ebrey's parents from his IGI birth/baptism record -- Thomas Ebrey and Isabella Gilchrist who married 31 Dec 1795 in Prees. The challenge is to find their son Thomas and his marriage to Anne, for which no IGI has yet been found.
I know I must order a copy of Jane's 1866 marriage record when she married Benjamin Booth, also of northern Shropshire. [They then came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, on their honeymoon and stayed!]. But I would welcome any other strategies for breaking through this brick wall. If it helps, click here for a longer query that I posted last year. Thank you!

Have you found her death record? I see the Benjamin Booth died in Milwaukee in 1890, but I can't seem to find Jane after 1900. I find her in Wisconsin but born in 1855, if I have the right Jane. :)
Also did you find her in 1841 in England?

Thanks for your reply. You DO have the right Jane Ebrey Booth and Benjamin Booth in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Benjamin's death is in Wisconsin records as 9 Jan 1890. See:

Family records say Jane died about June 1905, although she is in the 1905 Wisconsin census taken in June of that year. Her birth date varies from 1837 to 1855 based on different records. We tend to use the 1861 Census when she was recorded as 22, b. 1839, keeping house for Uncle Robert Ebrey. In 1851, she was in service in the household of Palin-Ebrey relatives and was recorded as 14 or b. 1837. I tend to think these are the more accurate, and she got "younger" as she got older.

It appears that Jane's cousin Henry Ebrey [son of Uncle Robert] married Benjamin's sister Sarah in the same quarter of 1866. Just a fun sidenote. Might have been a double wedding. Need to check that out too.
The problem is that I cannot find an IGI for Jane's birth, nor an 1841 census record for her with her parents or other relatives.
I welcome advice on strategies to follow next. I know I need to order her marriage record, to get confirmation of her father's name. I've just placed a query on a discussion about Ebrey families in Shropshire and hope someone there might help. What else would you recommend? I would probably try to trace her children if you haven't already, and see if there are others trying to find more on Jane.
Also, I tried a search on Ancestry for an Ebrey born 1839 +/- 2 years, in Shropshire and found an Ann Ebrey, age 2 with parents(I'm assuming) Thomas and Ann, both age 30, and possible siblings Beatrice, 7 and Mary, 4. Thomas was a farmer though, which doesn't quite match the butcher theory.
They were in Loppington, Pimhill, Shropshire.
just something to consider- I don't know how common the name Ebrey is? -
