Getting Started!

Welcome and thank you for supporting Most Wanted.

Please post your challenge to the Most Wanted! Discussion Forum
Click here: Post your Most Wanted/Brick Wall/Broken Link Challenge

There seems to be an RSS feed advantage to posting challenges to the Most Wanted "Discussion Forum" rather than on the "Comment Wall." It's also easier to keep responses and attachments organized if a challenge is posted as a Discussion. Twenty challenges appear on this page; click "View All" to browse the collection and to subscribe to the RSS feed.

In addition to the link above, "Post your Most Wanted ... Challenge," you will find a "Start Discussion" button located on this page at the end of the items in the section that follows "Getting Started."

Don't forget the archives!
There are important collections at the national level, but learn, too, if local or state level historical and/or genealogical societies and/or libraries maintain card or clipping files, family files. Try to discover information about the manuscript collections often held by societies and libraries. Some repositories have searchable online catalogs.

It would be great to join, but the last time I tried to log onto Second Life, I got a message saying that my computer no longer met the system requirements. I'm not sure why, because looking at the requirements posted in the link, I am sure it meets many of them. Even before I got this message, whenever I did go on there everything moved at the pace of a snail. I did get a memory upgrade since then (but I believe even before I did, my computer met the minimum memory requirements), but nothing else has been changed.

To readers of this Group

Second Life has been mentioned many times to this group. I would hope that you think about joining us in our Chats about Brick Walls. Last night (7/27) GeneJ and the group tackled two, of the brickwalls from postings on this Group list.

To give you an idea about WHY you might want to join, when the discussion is on a brick wall, we ALL bring to the table (so to speak) our own research skills and favorite search sites. As the facts are presented, those participating in the Chat, may be off doing a search, while watching the SL screen for more information

These are real live, online Chats. There was a Brick Wall about a Rail Road Pension. I was out searching on my favorite site, with only one good result, but another participant did a site on their favorite and found some leads.

Much of the time starts out with "Did you look ........ ?" Yes / No -- what did you find, or not find, then the discussion moves on.

The Requirements and other information about Second Life can be found here:

http://brickwalls.ning.com/

The Calendar is on that website, down near the bottom of the page. You can print it and / or added it to your Google Calendar. If have done that, and set up reminders to addend.

Please join us with your Brick Wall, to learn how to knock them down, or to help us break down someone else Brick Wall.

Thank you,

Beth, you can also find 1860 records on Heritage Quest, which is available through some libraries.
Comment by Beth Gatlin on July 27, 2009 at 10:51am
Thanks, Kate! Some of those will come in handy, but I also have a record from 1860.

Hi Beth-

There are some free images/info on US census records on FamilySearchLabs, including 1850, 1870, 1900 and some 1920.
Comment by Beth Gatlin on July 27, 2009 at 9:33am
About uploading files: I have records from two Canadian censuses which are publicly available, so I think those would be allowed, but I think some U.S. census images are only available on subscription sites like ancestry.com. So I'm guessing those are off-limits, unless we post links to the records instead of the images themselves, so that people who have subscriptions can view them.

Linda, you are so right. After all these years, my mother is finally learning the actual names of some of her cousins because all she ever knew was the nickname because that's all anybody ever called them.

What's really interesting is that my mom hates nicknames (even as a child) and wouldn't let her parents give her nicknames and she really wouldn't let anybody give me one. I have two aunts that had pet names for me but I never went by them.
Comment by Carol Dobkins Keith on July 25, 2009 at 1:11pm
Linda is certainly right-my mother is Bertha Helen-her father insisted on "Bertha" in honor of one of his old girlfriends; therefore, Mom always hated it; and always went by Helen. We all "took our life in our hands", when we called her Bertha. Also, people tended to nickname the kids-a lot of the Mary Polly-whoever, you look for is really just Mary, or maybe Mary Ellen, Mary Jane-the Polly is a nickname-the same applies to most of the Margaret Peggys running around-probably just Margaret, Peggy being the nickname. A lot of the Mollie/Mollys were Mary. It's really hard running down the records, even a lot of them have the nickname on their tombstone, rather than their actual name.
