Amazing week for genealogy!

Posted on October 20, 2009 at 10:33am 2 Comments

This has been quite a week! Over the weekend my aunt visited and she lent me some photos and documents, which I scanned. She has the most amazing collection of family information. I still can't believe some of the things she has! I am so grateful that she shared it with me. I even found the name of the town in Germany that one of my great-great-grandmothers was born in. Now if I could just read it! I also borrowed my father's baby book, and my grandmother put information in there about other… Continue

Family rumor disproved

Posted on October 13, 2009 at 11:36pm 2 Comments

For many years there has been a rumor in my family that my grandmother had been adopted from her father's cousin's family in New Mexico. My grandmother wrote a letter to my uncle in 1976 which mentioned this rumor (she never believed that it was true), and the family was discussing the rumor at my mother's Fourth of July barbecue this past summer, so this is something that has been speculated about for more than thirty years, possibly longer. Long ago, when my grandmother needed to get a… Continue

Great-uncle's death record from Mexico found!

Posted on October 10, 2009 at 12:23am 0 Comments

I just found out that ancestry.com has the database Reports of Deaths of American Citizens Abroad, 1963-1974. Ancestry.com's October Monthly Update e-mail newsletter mentioned the database. I was thrilled to find this out, because my great-uncle died in Mexico in 1974. I had been planning to contact the National Archives to get a copy of his death record, but since ancestry.com has the database I was able to get the record immediately and not have to spend extra money for it. And it… Continue

Noted you have a Hardgrave. In the late 1950's I cadeted at Fishburne Military School, Waynesboro, Virginia. Not too far away in the Shenandoah Valley was old Hargrave/Hardgrave Military School. I have an odd Swiss lineage via 1750's Adam Hollinger of Hollinger's Island off Mobile, Alabama, known to be from Ireland (Wm. & Titus Hollinger, sutlers and distillers of Revolutionary War, Georgia, are thought to be Irish). There is a picture of him under a silly periwig--ugh!  His parents are unknown, but supposedly he descends 1649 Irish militia officer, Capt. Ruprecht Robert Hollinger, born 1590, Waldshist, Switzerland, married 1640 Holland. The state of Georgia Hollingers are supposed to be kin to Philip Hollinger who died 1724 Kent County, Maryland, and Col. Andres Hollinger. Today there are/is supposed to be Hollingers (of an odd religion?) at Taylorstown, Ballyscullion Parish, Co. Antrim, N. Ireland?

HI, Beth, I meant to write to you last week, but I wanted to say I'm so sorry to hear about Sunshine. We missed you at the chat last monday night, and someone mentioned about her, and I feel so bad. I know how you loved her. Please accept my heartfelt sympathies.

Hi Beth- Thanks for replying to my blog post. You have an interesting page. I see that you are also Swiss and wonder where your family came from? If you spent much time with my page, you will have seen that I am very interested in my Swiss heritage. We hail from tiny Corippo in the Ticino district. Small scale sheep farmers and dairy folk. Your family?

My great-grandfather was Montgomery Binkley, the brother of your great-great-great grandfather, Davidson Binkley. Montgomer's son was David C. Binkley and his daughter was my mother, Henrietta Frances Binkley. Do you know the name of Davidson and Montgomery's father ?

Hey, Beth, It was fun meeting you and chatting with you today. I just wish we had more time to sit and talk. I'm usually so busy setting up and cleaning up that I don't get enough time to do that. Maybe next time- or here on GenealogyWise! Thanks for coming to the meeting!
