It is really great to see that so many of you are enjoying the Social Media course. There are just so many ways to interact with each other these days, as well as increasing your chances of finding that elusive ancestor. Do remember that you do not have to be enrolled in a particular course to join in the chat sessions, sometimes this can be a good way of finding out if a course is for you.
Count me as one in the Social Network Course. It has really been a very worthwhile course. I too plan on taking some courses from NIGS.
I am a graduate and big supporter of the NIGS (National Institute of Genealogical Studies) and still involved in taking new courses. There have been a few minor downsides to NIGS with some of their courses that could not find good leaders. An example is the Scottish Courses with a number of students still waiting to complete the basic level. There are also a few areas where some students would like to see additional level courses such as in DNA. Overall students can complete several different specialties such as Canada, United States, England, Ireland & Germany to name a few and achieve a final certificate at the advance level of these courses. Those interested in expanding their knowledge should also look at possible courses available at other organizations although none of these seem to have the extent of what is offered at NIGS.
Welcome Sandy
You have certainly set yourself a heavy schedule! I liked the flexibility of being able to take the courses when I could manage to fit them in, some months I did a couple of courses, then maybe I had a break before doing some more, if things got hectic.
Don't forget to join some of the chat sessions, you don't have to be doing a particular course to be able to join in the chat.
Good Luck
Hi Mary
I guess there will not be many changes, but it does mean that GenWise will be promoted more and we shall hopefully see more students chatting on the site. I would love to see more students communicating with each other through this sort of networking. That's the way we help each other to break down those brick walls in our research!
Have you had a look at the courses available through the National Institute? They are doing specials to celebrate the acquisition of GenWise - try the Social Networking course, you will have a pleasant surprise!
