I am a big fan of the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. I have been taking courses from the Institute for the past three years, my aim being to receive certificates for Canada and England/Wales. I have learned a lot from the almost 30 courses under my belt; and I plan to continue taking courses after graduation. There are so many courses that interest me!
Hi Dan
I am pleased that you are enjoying the course, there is so much in Social Networking - much more than I had thought of until I started writing the course!
Hi Nannette Fretwell,
There are many way to share your genealogy for free. You can even do it on GenealogyWise by starting a group, blog or adding details to your MyPage profile. As you find out more information you may want to keep track of it all in a software program for genealogy.
There are some basic programs available for free or some with more enhancements for a low price. All these genealogy programs have ways to copy and share your files with others. Some researchers use just a word processor or spread sheet to document their genealogy. There are also places on the Internet to share family information such as https://www.familysearch.org/
Always remember to respect the privacy of others and it is suggested you do not post details about ‘living’ people on the Internet unless you get permission and even then use caution. I would suggest you should only share details regarding living people with close relatives to prevent identity theft.
Hi Brenda,
They are still doing the Teddy that is great. I was in NIGS first graduation class and have my teddy from 2003. Since he is white and 8 years old now he his getting a little dusty. Louise is great but I don't know how she does what she does. Always on the move and recently she started becoming a world traveler to promote NIGS. I always tell folks that NIGS was one of the first to offer online genealogy course and to enhance it with some of the new technical abilities such as live meetings. I always carry an apple with me when I attend any genealogy conferences to give to my favorite teacher, Louise.
Hi,I am currently a student on the Social Media for the Wise Genealogist Course.
I met some members last year in London at WDYTYA and enrolled on courses with the institute since then. I have a blog at http//scotlandsgenealogy.blogspot.com
Looking forward to taking more courses with the institute.
Being in Australia, the chance of going to my graduation was a non starter, but I was thrilled when I met Louise late last year at a Roadshow here, and she presented me with my Graduation teddy!
That was brilliant, as I was so upset that I could not make it to Canada for my graduation.
The Institute 1st graduation was held during the OGS Conference at Toronto in 2003. I am not sure about other years since they do not show details on the website. If held around Toronto there are always lots of hotel accommodations. I think you can see from the 2004 photos on the Institute site it was semi formal. You would have to contact the Institute to ask about any upcoming or future graduations.
