My children's paternal line hails from this couple, both born in Ireland and migrated to Pennsylvania, then to Chicago, Illinois area.

Mary O'Connell was born about 1820 in Ireland. She married John O'Connor, who was born about 1815 in Ireland.

Their son, John was born in 1852 in Shamokin, Northumberland, Pennsylvania. He married Susan Coulston, who was born in 1856 in Philadelphia.

The family migrated to the Chicago, Cook, Illinois area, where they lived for a few generations.

Cheryle, funny mine moved to Chicago in the late 20's which is where we remain.
My furthest ancestor John O'Connell was born Nov 1854, not 100% sure if in NY. All census records state he was born in NY as well as his family. Though all of his children's census records show he is from Ireland. I am still trying to get ahold of death records.
Terri, the Mary O'Connell I mention had a brother, John O'Connell. No information on him. Her other siblings were: Margaret, Elizabeth, and Thomas. No information on them, nor their parents. I don't know if any of the other O'Connells moved to Chicago, but do know Mary did. John and Mary were still in PA in 1882, as one of their children, Rae, was born that year in PA.

It is sad that you have no other info on the John O'Connell. That seems to be the popular reply for all O'Connell's. It is a big secret. I guess I should be happy with what I have found. I have been in contact with a daughter of John's daughter Catherine and that was big for me. She is in her 80's and was impressed with what I had found so far. She did not know that there was other family out there. I hope I get the chance to get to NY and meet her.
I've found the O'Connell family I'm researching difficult to find, but I'm determined! I'll share what I find!
