If you're a beginner to Scottish Genealogy (or looking for some suggestions on how to expand your research) I think one of the best things you can do is read a book. Here are some titles from my bookshelf. What books have you found helpful?

'Scottish Genealogy' - Bruce Durie, The History Press, 2009
'Tracing Your Scottish Ancestors - The Official Guide' - National Archives of Scotland, Birlinn, 2009
'Rooted in Scotland' - Cameron Taylor, Luath Press, 2007
'Gathering the Clans' - Alan Stewart, Phillimore, 2004
'Tracing Your Scottish Ancestry' - Kathleen B. Cory, Polygon, 2004
'Scottish Family History' - David Moody, Batsford, 1988
'In Search of Scottish Ancestry' - Gerald Hamilton-Edwards, Phillimore, 1986

Are there any books or websites, anywhere, that anyone knows of, that might give lists of names of people from Lowland Scotland who were relocated to Ireland as part of the Ulster Plantation effort? Not the higher social-class people, the "Oversee-ers" or "Adventurers", but just the plain folk that went over to fill up the plantation and "do the work"! I'm at a dead-end trying to get beyond my Scots-Irish grx5 grandparents (Hugh and Eliza Cargo). So I've been hoping to trace records of the Plantation, and maybe be able to discover when the family left Scotland, for Ireland. I'm wondering if this is even possible? If records of these people were even kept? Or, did these sorts of records also get destroyed in that big fire....hmm, when was it? I think sometime in the 1920's? (sorry, only got a few minutes this morning, and don't have notes RE: exact date/place of the fire, in front of me)

Great question Pam. I have wondered the same thing. My ARBUCKLE, STRANG, McKINLAY & DARKIS Families were in Ireland - probably all to County Tyrone at least before early 1800s when a Thomas ARBUCKLE & Rebecca DARKIS were born there. Thomas & Rebecca married (not sure if in Ireland or Scotland) but all their children were born in Scotland in Stirlingshire - Falkirk & Balfron. I'm thinking, perhaps, they went back to the area (Stirlingshire) that their parents & ancestors had come from originally. One of my brick walls! Thanks for asking the question. Hopefully, someone can help.

Have you tried 'Scots-Irish Links 1575-1725' (Four Parts) or 'Later Scots-Irish Links 1725-1825' (Two Parts) both by David Dobson? I'm not sure how 'ordinary' the people listed were but these books may be worth a try.

Many of David Dobson's book are available from reference libraries here in Scotland and I see both these titles are on Amazon.com although I'm not clear whether this includes all parts.
Thanks Kirsty:

Will see if my library has them, or if not, maybe get them on ILLs. Violet

You should set your sights low on that question! It is generally very difficult if not impossible to locate such records. Sometimes you may get lucky, for example I have seen Kennedy entries in the Ayrshire sasines which link people from Ayrshire to specific locations in Ulster. But even these are probably of above average wealth.
For example in 1622 I found a record of a 'James Kennedy messenger formerly in Maybole afterwards in Bellicastle, Ireland.' (modern spelling Ballycastle in Co. Antrim).

I have recently purchased "Lyon Memorial, Vol. II: Lyon Families Association of America", 1907; reprinted and expanded recently. The Lyon family spread across England and Scotland after 1066. In Scotland they settled in Glen Lyon, then were appointed Thane of Glamis and Master of Glamis at various times and as a reward for various deeds on behalf of the crown. They emigrated in 1648 settling first in Connecticut and then in Elizabeth, NJ. The book covers the history of both times as well as theirinfluence on the family genealogy.

I am willing to do lookups if provided with names, dates, places, etc. With over 650 pages, its not for fishing expeditions.

In addition to the many Message Boards, "The Lyons Tail" can be found on line. Both resources include allied families.
