Liz & Kurt,
Thank you for that suggestion, I really wouldn't have thought of that possibility of a second marriage, at least not right off. Is it likely he was listed as James in SCT and John in Cumberland?

Larry,
Nice to meet someone else researching this surname! I'm not sure there's any connection between yours and ours, and I've only just learned that he was born in SCT. thus haven't really researched there as yet. For one thing, I've no idea WHERE to search there. Am going to try to find out a bit more from Cumberland first and see where that leads me. I've heard Quaker records in the USA are very good, but personally have only helped a friend with her Quaker research. I haven't done any of my own yet. Stay in tough, maybe we connect somewhere or can help each other, ya never know :)

There is a John Aiken born at the right time in Renfrew but you would need more evidence to connect him to 'your' man.

Lisa, you might try the parish session records [not the marriage records] as there may be a record of him transferring to the parish previous to his marriage. At the time "settlement" was an important concept allowing access to parish funds in the event of need.

I actually wondered the same thing as Kurt - if perhaps they had held a second ceremony in Scotland for "your" John's family/friends/neighbors.

Lisa,
It is entirely possible they married twice, strange as that may seem, especially if one of the marriages was in a church other than the Church of Scotland. I have several chldren who were baptized in the father's church (not the Kirk) and also in the mother's church in two different parishes.

Hi Lisa,
Are there any clues, no matter how small-seeming, in the information/documents you currently have? Any clues at all might help narrow down the place. Also, what was his occupation? Did he keep the same one his entire life?

Koczar, thanks for that info, but "my" John & Mary definitely married in Dalston, you can see on the image

Hello, I just joined here as I just got information (on rootschat) that my ancestor John Aikin that I was researching in Dalston, Cumberland, ENG was born in SCT.

John Aikin would have been born in SCT abt 1776, but I have no clue WHERE as yet. So am hoping for some guidance in how to go about finding that out. He later married Mary Skelton in Dalston in 1797, it says he was 21 and she was 23. The rest of the information I have on them is later years, children, etc. all in Dalston,Cumberland, ENG.
