I'm hoping that someone may be running a similar line of research. I am researching the Gordon line.DNA research indicates this line came from Scotland, thru Ireland and then to USA. My last identifiable is named Thomas Gordon B. 1814 Delaware. Any help vastly appreciated!

I'm interested in Lowery/Laurie and Montgomery surnames in Whiteletts (San Quivox Parish) in Ayrshire and Cromar and Niven surnames in Aberdeen.

In all the Scottish research I have done I have noticed a trend for the first-born to have the mothers maiden name for a middle name. I have used this before to push by a road block in cases where you only have a mothers first name.

Quoting Betty Oliver: "I would like to access the 1901 census for Glasgo (Milton district) for family forenames of Hamill living there at the time. Anyone help? "

The Ancestry transcription shows Walkinshaw (b abt 1865 Ayrshire) and wife Mary Jane (b abt 1866 Kircudbirght) in Govan plus Helen (b. abt 1872, she's Mrs Hamill) with 2 kids indexed as Harill (another Ancestry typo) - Abram age 5 and Catherine age 2.
There's also Lizzie Hamil (b abt 1877, Larank) and Annie Hamil (b. abt 1893 Glasgow). They're not in the same household.
If you go to Scotlands People you can download (for a small fee) the image of the census pages and see what's really there (as opposed to what Ancestry's transcribers saw).

All my ancestors on my mothers side apart from 1 line (who moved to Scotland) all come from either Lanarkshire, mainly Larkhall, Stonehouse or Hamilton and surrounding areas or Ayrshire, there are family rumours that we do have some highlander ancestors on the McGregor and Bruce lines.

Quoting Sandy: "James Walker born March 8 1856 Father William, mother Margaret Wallace, married Agnes Robertson born Apri 18 1856 in Parish of Pencaitland County of Haddington I had a friend "Mary" whomed got me a copy of their marriage license but it is difficult to understand"
.
The best way to find out more about these people is to go to Scotlands People and download (for a small fee) copies of their birth certificates. However, if you can put a scan of their marriage certificate on line and tell us where, we can take a look and see if we can read it - what is the problem? Is it faded or bad handwriting? It should give you both sets of parents.

I am researching the Scott Family from West Morriston (near Legerwood & Earlston). George Scott married Betty Pringle. They had sons Thomas b 1800, George b 1802, James b 1810. They all travelled to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). Does anyone have them in their family tree?
