Comment by Armando Framarini on November 27, 2009 at 9:32pm: Researching "van Soldt" family who migrated from Belgium area in 1400's to Amsterdam (1500's) to England (1600's) to New Netherlands and Virginia colonies.
SOULE is one of the variants. This would be different from the Soule family in London which came from Holland in the same time frame.

I think in England that the many Sole families are derived from the wry English humor: so an orphan would be called 'Sole'. I think George Soule/Sol was born in Holland, got mixed up in an illicit printing effort, and fled for his life on the Mayflower, along with printing associates Brewster and Winslow.
