Looking for any information oon John Hardin Smith of Co K 14th IL infantry...he was from Winchester, IL and was a prisoner at Andersonville...he ended up in Winslow, AR and was a Justice of the Peace, Mayor and City Clerk...I am working on a display for him for our local museum and am trying to gather as much info on him as I can...thanks for your help!

He was from Anderson Sc and Killed at the battle of Tenn. I have another fro Arkansas and most of the states you mention. SH

According to the Daughters of the Confederacy they only have pension records for

Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky,Louisiana, Missouri, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

I was reading on the internet about the papers for the civil war soldiers. They were saying that the first card that tells the name etc has a number that tells what information is in the file. There is only one number on the card (each number is supposed to be for a different thing in the file. Does that mean that there is only one thing in the file? I would like to send for it but not if it just tells his name etc. Should I call? There is also another address I found that sounds like you can get information for a time without paying. "footprints" I have a lot of ancestors that were in the military from the rev.war on and i would love to find out more about all of them. Thank you

James never submitted an application for a pension but his wife did and I do have that. She doesn't mention his being captured but one of his officers stated in the application that he and James were prisoners together for a time. The application was approved. I am a member of the SCV but didn't think to ask them. I will contact the good ladies and see how they may help me. Thank you for your suggestions.

Phillip, have you sent for his pention records, that will tell you everything you need. Also if you contact the Sons of the Confederatcey they may have or tell you were a list is . Also the Daughters of the Confederatcey are very helpful....I got my ancestors servce record AND penttion for 41 dollars includeing S and H. And there is tons on information in those pettions. THE DAUGHTERS have a web site and contact information , worth a try......meant UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERATCEY

I just discovered that my ancestor James Howell Carothers, Company H, 11th Tennessee Infantry was captured Jan 1864 and was a prisoner of war at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois until he was exchanged in March 1865. I have been trying to find a list of prisoners with his name on it so I can document his internment. I have googled Rock Island Barracks but could not find a list of names. I looked at various gen web sites, and the NARA, ditto. If someone out there can help me find a list I would greatly appreciate it.

I am not sure but if the Vet was wounded in serivce it will be on his pettion record and the vet will sate his injurries and where he recieved  them, what battle etc in his pettion aplacation. I still have several pages of my ggg uncles file to read and have anotheer ggg uncle to get records on. I believe there is a phone number on the UDOC home page if you want to ask about possabile medical records. Shoot, I may have medical records in my ggg uncles pettion file but just may not have gotten to it yet. Good Luck... isnt it so exciting when you het longed for info. take care

Robin, that's good to know, I didn't realize the Daughters had that information.  Do you know if they also have medical records for soldiers.  I have ordered several pension and service records and a couple mention medical issues.  I have not been able to track down any additional information.  I know if you order from the National Archives you need to specify medical records if you want them in addition to service files.  Thanks.
