My gr grandfather was McClellan George Smith, born in Vermont. His father was also born in Vermont and from there I believe, though have not proved or found that that Smith line came from Rhode Island. Hello. Trying to find parents of John Smith, born c1808, Clay/Breathitt County, Kentucky; died Phelps County Missouri; married Telitha Sanders. He lived in Indiana in 1829 when his son William was born. He lived in Missouri in 1860.
Following Smith research would seem to be most difficult. My great-grandmother was Lillie Viola Smith (1875-1931) from Bibb County, Alabama and an orphan. Her father was named Kirby Smith, mother was Fannie Fulman. No one seems to know what Kirby's father's name was or where they may have come from. Fannie died when Lillie was about 10 years old. The family was broken up and children "adopted" by various neighbors.

I cannot find out who her parents were. I have her marriage lisc and there is no mention of her mother and father. There is no death cert for her as that was not required in Il in 1902.

(Smith) Davis my perdicument is that my fathers mother was supossedly married at the time of his birth to a HARRIMAN but he was ill and so my grandmother had a child from a "SMITH" . My fathers name was Harry Douglas Smith and he was born in Troy, N.Y. Gosh thanks all of you but I truly don't know my fathers parents name. The only link would be his mother my grandmother who at the time was married to a "Harriman". Her name was Florence Mae (Allen) Harriman and she was married to Arthur Granville Harriman at the time. I believe that she had my father Harry Douglas Harriman-Smith in Troy New York. This is where her family lived so she went home to have him. Dad carried the Harriman name all the way through school and when he went into the service had his name change leagally to Smith.. To help in your researching of James B. Smith, bear in mind that after the Revolutionary War the counties of western Virginia beyond the Appalachian Mountains were known as Kentucky County, Virginia. I am currently looking for information on Elial C. Smith, born about 1822, probably in Ohio, who married Catherine Hamline. The first census that Elial and Catherine show up on (that I have found) is 1850, when they and their children are living in Findley, Ohio. They travelled to Michigan in 1854 and settled with their children, George Washinton Smith among those children, and show up in Salem Township, Allegan County, Michigan on 1870 and 1880 census. I have not been able to find any information about the parents of either Elial C. Smith, or his wife Catherine (Hamline) Smith. If anyone has any information, or ideas, I would be grateful the the help. Thanks!
In a US Census of 1790 through 1840 only the property owner's name is listed, with rare exception. Starting with 1850 all members of the immediate family are listed. Now to look for an 1860 US Census report...and, tragically, the 1890 Census was almost completely destroyed by flame and water.
My Smiths are from Massachusetts, descending from William, the emigrant who settled in Charlestown and died there in 1654 and his son Nathaniel who died in Haverhill in 1692.

Smythe is my married name, but I have found that it might be Smith. My husband's grandfather was Charles M Smythe supposedly born in 1861 in Richland county Wisconsin. On his marriage record in 1895 he said his parents were J D Smythe and Elizabeth Williams. I have after years of research found a Charles M Smith with parents John D Smith and Elizabeth Williams who were married in 1844 in Marion county OH. This family is on the 1850 Marion OH census, 1860 Richland WI, 1870 Algona, Kossuth IA and 1880 Elizabeth was a widow on the Wesley, Kossuth IA census. I can not find Charles M on any of the census' with this family, but he married a Lottie Williams in 1886 in Clinton, IA listing parents John D Smith and Elizabeth Williams and another son of John D Smith and Elizabeth Williams married a Lottie V Williams in Richland, WI in 1897 with the same set of Smith parents and Williams parents. I have researched all of the children of this John D Smith family and do not find a Charles anywhere. This above information has too many coincidences. If anyone knows this Smith family please contact me.

I am a decendent of Smiths as well on my paternal side of the family. Smith, Johnson, Lawson and Tarbush (Terbush), from around Oklahoma, Tennesee, Kansas, New York, Germany,.
My Paternal G-Grandfather on the Smith side was John Hood Smith. B: August 1898 in Mont Eagle, Marion Co., Tennessee- D: 16 Jan., 1973 in Pona City, Kay Co., Oklahoma, his wife was Mary Edna Johnson. B: 7 June 1907 in Pratt, Pratt Co., Kansas - D: 6 June 1940 in Ralston, Pawnee Co., Ok.
I am willing to share any information on our family genealogy.

My Maternal Grandfather is: George Elbert Smith Born 14 Jun 1875 Viroqua WI, Died 5 Dec 1955 Winner, SD. His father is James A. Smith (1825-1908) born in Scioto, Ohio. Died in Viola WI. His mother was Margaret Catherine Allen. Born 1 Apr 1842 in Perry, Ohio. Died in Viroqua WI 1 Jun 1905.

I am currently looking for information on Elial C. Smith, born about 1822, probably in Ohio, who married Catherine Hamline. The first census that Elial and Catherine show up on (that I have found) is 1850, when they and their children are living in Findley, Ohio. They travelled to Michigan in 1854 and settled with their children, George Washinton Smith among those children, and show up in Salem Township, Allegan County, Michigan on 1870 and 1880 census. I have not been able to find any information about the parents of either Elial C. Smith, or his wife Catherine (Hamline) Smith. If anyone has any information, or ideas, I would be grateful the the help. Thanks!

In a US Census of 1790 through 1840 only the property owner's name is listed, with rare exception. Starting with 1850 all members of the immediate family are listed. Now to look for an 1860 US Census report...and, tragically, the 1890 Census was almost completely destroyed by flame and water.

My Smiths are from Massachusetts, descending from William, the emigrant who settled in Charlestown and died there in 1654 and his son Nathaniel who died in Haverhill in 1692.

I agree completely. Family Tree DNA and my "DNA Cousins" have been so helpful...except I still haven't found my connecting ancestor to our Immigrant Ancestor, Francis of Hingham and Taunton.
Have you taken the Family Finders test? I have, and that is fascinating - but no luck on my Smith yet...
I would certainly agree with your recommendation!

Yes, the U.S. census through 1840 is not particularly helpful unless one happens to be looking for the property owner! Thanks you for the suggestions about Smiths DNA. I'll will look into this.

they live next door to a JOHN H. SMITH and wife Elizabeth
Also Family # 42
JAMES SMITH and wife ELIZABETH
James Family and Thomas Family both went to St. Francis County Arkansas.
does anyone have any information about these families in any direction?

Smythe is my married name, but I have found that it might be Smith. My husband's grandfather was Charles M Smythe supposedly born in 1861 in Richland county Wisconsin. On his marriage record in 1895 he said his parents were J D Smythe and Elizabeth Williams. I have after years of research found a Charles M Smith with parents John D Smith and Elizabeth Williams who were married in 1844 in Marion county OH. This family is on the 1850 Marion OH census, 1860 Richland WI, 1870 Algona, Kossuth IA and 1880 Elizabeth was a widow on the Wesley, Kossuth IA census. I can not find Charles M on any of the census' with this family, but he married a Lottie Williams in 1886 in Clinton, IA listing parents John D Smith and Elizabeth Williams and another son of John D Smith and Elizabeth Williams married a Lottie V Williams in Richland, WI in 1897 with the same set of Smith parents and Williams parents. I have researched all of the children of this John D Smith family and do not find a Charles anywhere. This above information has too many coincidences. If anyone knows this Smith family please contact me.

Hi: my maiden name was Smith. I have only gotten back as far as my gr gr grandfather Schuyler Ephriam Smith b 1819 in Stanstead Plain, QC m Lucinda Robinson Blake b 1817 in Island Pond, Vt. I think they were both hatched from eggs as I have never been able to go any further back. Most of the family branches lived in the NE area & still do.

Still looking for ancestor Josiah Thompson Smith born 1812 in PA. He's my primary 'brick wall' after 30+ years of research. Lived in Hamilton County, OH 1832-39, Des Moines Co. IA 1839-52, Siskiyou County California 1852-62, Los Angeles CA 1870. Connected with Cummins family in Ohio. It's possible the name "Milton" is associated with the family as descendants carried that name as a middle name. There is info on Ancestry about him, but it is my work (but not submitted by me).

Gilead, Marrow Co., OH. 1850 lived at Liberty, Henry Co., IN. 1860 lived in Jefferson, Henry Co., IN. 1870 lived at Athens, Gentry Co., MO. 1880 lived in Dallas Twp., Harrison Co., MO. Died 18 Jan 1895 at Harrison Co., Missouri. I show him married twice; one to Mary M. Rench 22 Nov 1846 and second to Sarah J. Flin 03 Jul 1883. I have his family once they were in Harrison Co., MO but have not found were his son Peter was buried (1855-1959 in Indiana). I can not find his parents. Anyone know anything about this family?
