I am interested in WELSH Sorn.Any help please.
  • John C. "JC" Snodgrass

Our surname Snodgrass was very prevalent in the Ayrshire area for several years. But I have been unable to get any information out of this area about my surname other than some pictures that a cousin took of the family's manor house and out buildings before they tore them down and made a parking lot out of the area. I don't know.

I have a lot of loose ends on family line leading back to Scotland.
  • Barbara Woodside

    Hi,

Below is the information I do have for my ancestors, but I'd love to know more about the following: David Moffat & Elizabeth Knox. Also, my grandmother had the names 'Easton' and 'Hunter' as middle names but I've been unable to find anything definitely about those names other than 'Easton' comes through the McKnight side.

I would appreciate any information anyone can offer. I have pictures and further information regading the McKnights that I will be happy to share.

    Thank you,

    Barbara

Elizabeth Moffat, daughter of David Moffat (shoemaker) and Elizabeth Knox, was born in 1839, and died about 1901. Elizabeth was unmarried and the father of Agnes Moffat is unknown. Elizabeth later married John Jamieson (a widower, 1st wife was Margaret Kirkwood, who worked as a pit headman), on June 3, 1864. John and Elizabeth had the following children: Elizabeth, b: 6-22-1864, Beith; Allan, b: 2-6-1867, Beith; Helen, b: 4-23-1869, Beith; Janet, b: 3-30-1872, Beith; John, b: abt. 1877, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire; David, b: abt. 1880, Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland.

(David & Elizabeth had the following children: Elizabeth Moffat, John Moffat, b: 1841, Beith, d: Sept. 3, 1919 Symington, Ayrshire; Jeanie Moffat, b: 1846 Beith, Ayrshire; Janet, b: 1848, Ayrshire, Scotland. David married a second time to Agnes Allan who was born in 1807 in Beith. They were married on Sept. 20, 1859 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland.).

Agnes Moffat was born December 3, 1860 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland and died March 9, 1949 in Dalmuir, Scotland. She was 88 years old and died at the home of her daughter Agnes Donaldson. Agnes married Alexander Easton McKnight on October 18, 1886 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland. Alexander is the son of Alexander McKnight and Jane Easton (birth certificate shows Robert McKnight however death certificate and other documentation shows Alexander E.). He was born April 29, 1860 in St. Quivox, Ayrshire, Scotland and died March 22, 1922 in Dalmuir, Scotland. He was 60 years of age and died at the home of daughter Mary McKnight. In order to find work (Alexander was a cabinet maker), the McKnight family lived in Belfast, Ireland for many years, Alexander worked for Harland & Wolff, shipbuilders, but eventually they returned to Scotland (approx. 1916).

Children of Agnes Moffat and Alexander Easton McKnight:

    i. David McKnight, b: 1890, Scotland
    ii. Alexander Easton McKnight, b: 1892; d: 1892, Scotland
iii. Jane Easton Hunter McKnight, b: 1893, Scotland
    iv. Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ McKnight, Scotland
    v. Helen ‘Nellie’ McKnight, b: 1900, Belfast, Ireland
vi. Mary McKnight, b: Feb. 18, 1902, Belfast, Ireland
vii. Agnes McKnight, b: Feb. 1903, Belfast, Ireland

Jane Easton Hunter McKnight was born April 26, 1893 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland (At the time of her birth the family was living at 62 Eglington Street, Beith, Scotland). She died on December 2, 1934 of pneumonia, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jennie, as she was called, married Samuel Frazer Woodside on April 5, 1915 in Philadelphia. Samuel was born October 15, 1892 in Antrim, Ballycastle, Ireland and died May 10, 1961 in Philadelphia, PA. Both Jennie and Sam are buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery.

(Note: Jennie arrived in the USA on December 29, 1914. She departed Glasgow on the SS Cameronia, arriving Ellis Island, Philadelphia, PA. Apparently Jennie made two trips, arriving originally in 1912, going home for a short while and returning in 1914. Samuel arrived in the USA by way of Canada where he had worked for the railroad.)
  • Iain Kennedy

My interest is the Kennedy family, I run a one-name study into the Kennedy surname.

    Iain Kennedy
  • Alison Macbeth Mitchell

I have a tree for Mitchells who were mainly farmers in the Mauchline / Sorn / Cumnock / Tarbolton areas going back to the mid 18th century, also Mairs in Avondale and Mauchline. ALISON.
  • William Stewart Jackson

I am primarily interested in descendants of John Jackson (1843-1910) and Mary Gaw (1845-1922). They emigrated from Ireland in the very early 1860's and settled in Girvan, Ayrshire where they raised their family and eventually passed away. While my Grandfather Robert Jackson left for Canada in 1909, it appears at least some of their children settled in the area.

My wife and I will be visiting Girvan in September and would appreciate any help identifying descendants in the area.

    Bill Jackson
  • Anne Kerr

I'm tracing the descendants of James Lindsay (born ca 1820) and Elizabeth Clark (born ca. 1820) who came to Largs, Ayrshire from Ireland. They married in Largs in 1849 and had eight children, only two of whom reached adulthood. And only the son James left descendants. He married Mary Ann Boyd in 1871 and had twelve children. I've been tracing their descendants in Scotland, the United States, and Australia.
  • Leslie Tannahill

I've taken my mother's maiden name of Tannahill and know quite a bit about the background of my family but would be happy to discuss with others what I know. The Tannahills were pretty common in Ayrshire and Paisley.
  • Ellen Jennings

I'm interested in the Hugh Reid and Glover families who moved from Ayrshire to the Scottish Settlement in Lapeer County, Michigan between 1850 & 1860. There was a large community of folks in southeast Michigan who came from Ayrshire.

  • Russell Juhl

I have traced Robert Ker/Kerr back to Ayrshire where he left about 1770 for a brief stay in Ireland before moving on to Washington County, PA . He arrived with wife (Ireland - Jemima Morton) and daughter about 1774. He is said to be of the Kersland clan of Ker/Kerr rather than the borderland group. I think he was born in 1748 in Beith. Have tried to work out the Ayrshire Ker line but a lot of gaps and unknown.
  • LuRose Williams

I am searching for CALLAHAN male who would have emigrated from Scotland to Canada at the time the undertakers were being sent to New Scotland to settle. He may have been involved with the Hudon Bay Company late 1800's. Would have married Native American Okanan woman..could have been a farmer or fisherman. A lot of Scot Royalty relocated and took their servants along. to Canada.
  • Holly T. Hansen

I am searching for the birth record Matthew McBlain Thomson born Jan 9, 1854 in Ayr (or so the family traditions say) I find his birthday consistently listed on that date in all documents I have uncovered and I have a lot of them.

I'm giving a presentation at the Immigration Family History Expo next week in Salt Lake City and would love to have that piece of information available.

    Any ideas?
  • Lionel Benson

My wife Janet ( nee Kerr ) family history goes right back to the Ayrshire Kersland Ker/Kerr Family line, as a direct lineal descendant Janet is the 15th Great Grand Daughter of William Ker the first recorded Laird of Kersland in about 1204, we have a lot of Ker/Kerr family history down through the Kersland and Auchengree Ker/Kerr Family line.

I am researching my father's family, the Hunter's of Ayrshire. I am related to the Hunters of Hunterston and am a member of Clan Hunter.

My earliest Hunter is Malcom Hunter [b. 1680 Irvine, Ayrshire], but I do not know who his parents were.

Malcom's son, Edward Hunter [b. 1696 in Innerkip [Inverkip], Renfrewshire] married Elizabeth Ker/Kerr [b. 1700 Innerkip, Renfrewshire] about 1721.

I would appreciate help on any of the above names.

    Thanks in advance.
  • Rosemary Harris

Sorry Earl but your dates don't add up. Was John Hutcheson 104 when he fathered Jane and how could she marry 55 years before she was born.
If Jane was born in1881 you can get her birth certificate from Scotland's People by buying credits for 6 pounds which is about $US9. You can possibly get up to 5 certificates or parish record entries for the pre 1855 events for this amount.
  • Earl Watt

    Thank you Rosemary Harris.
I put the death date as her birth date. Jane was born 11 Oct 1807 and died 04 Oct 1881. Her father John was born 1777 and her mother was born 1781. I will buy some credits and see what I can get.

  • Earl Watt

To Rosemary, I have found some records Scotland page but there are others I am having trouble with.
  • Rosemary Harris

    Hi Earl
Did Alexander/William Watt die in Scotland and have you got his death certificate?
Did the death certificate of Jane Watt give you any clues. I see they married, or the banns were read in Muirkirk, did you get their marriage lines to see if they were both living there at the time? Where did you get your information on Alexander William and his parents and have you confirmed it? Someone here may be able to offer more suggestions to help you.

I'm looking for information on the recruitment of Ayrshire miners by the Hudson Bay Company in 1852 (abt).
They sailed on the "Colinda" for Vancouver, on a voyage marked by bad weather, bad food, illness and a high death rate among their children.
The women refused to travel further than Chile, and the miners were off loaded and charged with mutiny.
Some families managed to return to Ayrshire after a difficult time in Valparisao and Lota, Chile.
