I'm checking out your groups - have just started picking groups to join. I hate to admit it, but ... this is so much fun.
  • Cindy Johnston Sorley

Hi, We have a Johnston Group formed if you are interested. Just look under Groups and type in Johnston

Hi Cindy, Glad to find a neighbor! I know there is a genealogical society in Frederick, MD. I haven’t been yet, but hope to sometime. I think they go by the initials FRECOGS. You should be able to find it doing an internet search. Other than that, I am not aware of any. Unless you are a DAR member or eligible to be, there is a chapter in Shepherdstown.
  • Pat Thomas

They are in Padbury and Adstock, Buckinghamshire, very closely tied to the Keys/Keyes family. My whole line is up at World Connect, data base Tyrilla.
  • Nancy Bender

I haven't been to the CT library in quite awhile and my ancestors are not from this area, so no, I haven't done any research there.
As far as DAR, we don't meet during the summer, but when we start again in September, if you are interested, you can come to meeting as a prospective member.
  • Nancy Bender

Have you been to the library in Frederick? It has a room called the Maryland Room with lots of resources; and not just from Maryland.
  • Margaret Kerr Beckwith

Hello -- yes, Elkins is usually the coldest spot in the state!
  • Sharon McCann

Cindy, my McCann's first appeared in Rhode Island around 1840. All records show born in Ireland. Patrick McCann born about 1820. Haven't been able to trace beyond. So I don't know how or where they arrived in the U.S.
  • Sharon McCann

Unfortunately, I have not been able to determine where in Ireland Patrick Mccann was from. His wife's name was Mary McQuade, not sure of the spelling. Also have records that spell it as McQuiad.
  • Greta Koehl

Cindy - How did you get the GenealogyWise thingy as a widget on your blog? (Sometimes I'm so technologically challenged.)
  • Greta Koehl

Hey Cindy - Thanks! I had found the badges thingy and used it to put one on my Facebook page, but I hadn't realized you could do that on other pages by copying the "embed" part. Of course, at first the badge was too big, but I adjusted it down to fit.
  • Elizabeth G N Sleaford

which part of Preston do they come from?
  • Judy Pattenaude Rogers

Thanks, Cindy. I had a great weekend and it was nice to be thought of.
  • Diane Mason Gray

My ancestor, Permelia HENDERSON m William V. Chewning in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, on 22 Apr 1813. Permelia was born 17 Feb 1793 probably in Spotsylvania County, and she died in 1877 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of William & Frances "Fanny" (Collins) HENDERSON. I would like to learn about her siblings and, of course, her ancestry. She and William V. Chewning had 10 children that I know of who lived to adulthood. If any of this sounds remotely familiar, please let me hear from you. Thanks for writing.
  • John J. Kodak

McCann in Boston (Summerset) MA. cir. 1850
  • Sandra H. Butt

I'm researching the Anderson Family of Hampton County, SC. But, cannot find much about John Anderson b 1806 South Carolina.
  • Sandy Cowan

    Hi Cindy

My most distant Brandon line: Cornelius Brandon born in 1783 North Carolina and died in Tennessee in 1852. As far as I know, I am the only Brandon in West Virginia who is a descendent of Cornelius. Cornelius and Phoebe Tennison had 18 children so who knows.

  • Sharon McCann

Hi Cindy, sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I don't know how Patrick McCann arrived or when in the U.S. I haven't been able to track beyond Rhode Island. Also don't have any information on parents or siblings. I think he had a brother Barney, or at least a relative, as a Barney McCann age 20 is listed with the family in R.I. in 1850. Patrick would have been 30.
  • Melanie Fagan

It's always worth a check! And the other possible for me is Cork, so you never know it could turn up generations earlier. Which doesn't help now but...
  • Chloris Mary Irwin PECK born DEE

No, unfortunately my ancestor Alexander Kidwell was born in England emigrated to the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) where both he and his wife Phebe Tubb died. They left a fairly large family in South Africa.
    Best wishes,

  • Mary Trogg

Very frustrating. My good Catholic ancestors made sure every family had a Mary and a John. My husband's family named everyone John/Johanna!!
  • Anne Elizabeth Hulse Masters

    Cindy,
Thank you for the geographical information. It sure helps to hear from someone who actually lives in the area.

  • John C. "JC" Snodgrass

Thank you for the kind words on my granddaughter. Her mommy and her came home last Friday and asked if I had her picture up on the internet yet, and if she was put into the genealogy database. I told her no and that she would have to do all the work as I was updating the surname database with 41 pages of updates and I was tired. (I did it Tuesday night after I got home after the baby was born - but I didn't tell her that). Now I'm in a lull with genealogy, so I thought I's catch up on my blog's.
  • John C. "JC" Snodgrass

Thank you Cindy for the kind words about my new granddaughter. She's gave us a little scare early last week but I think and pray that the good Lord will let us keep her for a while.

good morning Cindy i am new to this site and dont have a clue for what its worth i come from the Drogheda area
  • Laurice Johnson

    HI Cindy,
My Yates are Thomas born in Naunton, Gloucestershire in 1848. His father Richard born 1808 in Lower Guiting, Gloucstershire and his father Thomas Yeates born about 1775, I think in Gloucestershire. I don't think any of my Yates' lived in Lancashire, so I don't think we have a connection. Good luck in your search.

    Thanks Cindy,

There was that small x on my page I often used but today it's not there today for some reason. As to that scammer there's lots of information on the Internet about it. It's the biggest scam going right now. We don't need that on GenWise for sure.

I'll have to find out why I'm not betting the little x anymore. Maybe it's a temporary glitch, I don't know. Hopefully, that will be solved soon.

Thanks again for your input. The more people that complain about scammers on GenWise; the better.
  • Sarah Coles

    Cindy,

On the small" x" deal I find I can delete a posting and the problem is the "x" is not showing up on my black background in white like it did before. As long as I see the "hand" I can delete a post. I might have to change the colors. It's odd that it showed white before and not now so it must be either a black "x" or some other dark color. Weird. I wonder if anyone else with black backgrounds are having an issue. I'll check that out.
  • John C. "JC" Snodgrass

Thanks Cindy, she's still not out of the dog house, so were still praying for her.

Are your Roe's from MD? I have been researching the Roe family on the Eastern Shore of MD for over 20 years.

  • Jeffrey Russell

I missed it, but it sounds like I didn't miss much.
  • Tony Leeming

Hi Cindy, nice to meet you.
I have only looked at Dewsbury much earlier (pre 1653) so I do not have details that you want. Have you looked at the IGI? It shows that Samuel & Mary Leeming had 4 children at Dewsbury; John 1833, Emma 1836, Elizabeth 1838 & Thomas Stapleton 1841. You could get the birth certificate for Elizabeth or Thomas. That would give you Mary's maiden name. It might also be wothwhile you looking at the Dewsbury film at your local LDS family history centre where you can confirm the IGI entries and perhaps find a marriage.
    Regards, Tony.
