My fingers were typing faster than my brain could keep up in my previous message. The Merrill name did not come from Tufts' first wife, but from his mother, who was Anne Merrill, (1708-aft Nov 1767, when she was baptized into the Congregational Church at Epping, NH). Tufts father was Jonathan Thomas. Then the line then goes back to Capt. Benjamin Thomas of No. Hampton, NH; James Thomas of Dover/Durham/Oyster River, NH and one time to Topsham, ME where he was driven off by the Indians and back to NH in 1675.
Sorry, I do not have any information on your Fred S. so I cannot help you there. Could he have been a child who died young, or do you have information on his progeny?
My husband, Fred E. Thomas, descends from James Thomas, son of Tufts and his second wife Fanny Bootman, and brother to your John. I've had some correspondence from others connected to this family, since John had 13 children, they were a prolific bunch. <G> Did you get the information from the 1790 Maine Families? We no longer live in Sebago Lake, ME, but have retired to Arizona.

My wife, Daisy, is working on a reply to you about your grandfathers - John and his father Tufts. I am doing an indepth study of our male DNA. One of your cousins [from John, son of Tufts] Gregory Lee Thomas of Scarboro and I have the same tested DNA. Also there is a Mark Bigaouette who matches and has a written history telling of his Thomas grandfather from the 1600's being captured by Indians and taken to Canada where the decedents name was changed to Bigaouette. We have been working on finding where our first grandfather, James, who married Martha Goddard came from. Best I can do so far is from Mullion, Cornwall England. But have more work to do.
Please send us your e-mail address. Ours is f1516thomas@gmail.com. We lived in Standish, Maine for over 50 years but not Arizona.

Herbert, I'll get back to you, but believe you are related to John Thomas, son of Tufts Thomas of Gorham, ME and Epping, NH. John settled in Andover Plus, ME, after moving a couple of times to Ohio and back again. Had a large family and three wives. The name of Merrill comes from Tufts' first wife, Abigail Sanborn. Second wife was Fanny Bootman, of whom we can find nothing. I'll see if I have anything at all on Fred, which is my husband's name as well. Daisy
