A chance connection at Jamboree

I was at the Southern California Genealogical Society's 2010 Jamboree this past weekend. I dropped by the Los Californianos booth, for at least the fourth time. The nice lady at the booth (I forgot your name!) asked me what the surname was of the family I had in early… Continue

Columbus Public Library

On a recent business trip, I visited the Columbus Public Library in Columbus, GA. What an amazing genealogy collection! They have as many stacks in the genealogy wing as my local library has in the whole adult section. They also have wi-fi throughout the library, so I was able to post my notes directly to my . . . → : CONTINUE…

Finding John Tanner

Sometimes all the computer power in the world cannot help you find the

family history records you are looking for. My Great-great-great

grandfather, John Tanner, is a case in point. My research goal was

really to look for John's great-great-grandfather, William Tanner. But

the search for William eventually lead to direct information about John

Tanner's birth, dates that had been passed down for hundreds of years

and had been the subject of a number of books.… Continue

Yo soy una mezcla de muchas cosas

La arena mortal de mis células llenas de

España con su música de toros

Cuando las caras de un pasado

Me miran por entre sus ojos rasgados

Que soy yo

Española o amerindia

El mestizaje me llena de confusión

Maldita sea

Porque es que mis antepasados

Se mesclaron

Llenándome de pena

Y curiosidad acerca de mis raíces

De aquí,… Continue

mtDNA Testing

I chose to use Family Tree DNA, which purports to have 90% of the genealogy DNA market share. I ordered the mtDNAPlus test kit. It’s a little more expensive than the basic mtDNA kit, but I knew I wouldn’t be satisfied with lesser results and . . . → : CONTINUE READING

Plaskett, Plasket- Cumberland, England UK, St. Croix and St. Thomas Danish West Indies, Denmark, Canada, USA

I am the grandaughter of Victor Augustus Plaskett b, March, 1888 in St. Croix, Danish West Indies and d. August, 1984 in St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands. Based on research it is my understanding that all Plasketts are related regardless of where they are from. There is a black side and a white side of the family which some may not know.

It appears that John Plaskett c. 1751 and Isabel Sergeantson, c. 1749 of Cumberland England had at least 8 children that we know of.…

Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western North Carolina: Burke County, Volume I

I found a great source record last week at the library. It’s a book called Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western North Carolina: Burke County, Vol. 1. The author is Emmet R. White and it was published in 1984 by Southern Historical Press, Inc. of Easley, S.C.

It has biographical sketches on many soldiers, including summaries of military . . . → :…

Isle of Axholme genealogy

If you have Ancestors from the Isle of Axholme (north-west Lincolnshire in England), a very good site is Axholme Ancestry. There's more about it here.

The site actually covers a bit more than the Isle of Axholme itself, and includes south-east Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire as well -- Humberside, in fact. So if you have any ancestors or other relatives… Continue

Who owns the genealogy? and Why?

In my last post, I addressed the question of who owns the genealogy?

Ownership of the information is an interesting question. As an example,

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) microfilmed the

Swedish Church records. A copy of the original microfilms is in the

Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Another copy went to the

Swedish National Archives. The Archives then "sold" the rights to these

films to Genline.com. Genline then digitized… Continue

From the Slush Pile to Publication. Do purple ravens exist?

Randomness can be defined as events that happen outside predictability, prior knowledge and beliefs. I’ll start with an example. What has Paris Hilton done for the fine arts? The answer: NOTHING. And yet, she became the next big thing.

Now let’s take this concept to the world of publishing with the idea that a writer’s manuscript, deep within the bowels of the slush pile, is discovered at random – regardless of whether you are Hemingway resurrected or just another…

Who owns the genealogy?

During the past few posts, I have been examining who owns the genealogy

companies. What I find is a mixture of huge multinational corporations

and family owned businesses. I did have an ulterior motive in examining

the ownership however, I had several larger issues to discuss and needed

to know a little background before I jumped into the controversial

arena. When you realize the diversity of the ownership of the larger

genealogy companies, you can imagine… Continue

Who owns the genealogy companies? Part Eight

Down the home stretch on who owns the genealogy companies. This time I

look at MyHeritage.com. Another of

the non-U.S. companies, headquartered in "the beautiful village of Bnei

Atarot, near Tel Aviv, Israel, founded by German Templers in 1902 under

the name of Wilhelma." See MyHeritage. Unlike

some of the other genealogy companies I have recently reviewed,

MyHeritage is… Continue
