Where is Beryer Wales?

Would anyone know where "Beryer, Wales" is? This is the birthplace given by my great great Robert Lloyd on the 1851 census. He was a servant for the Weldon family in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. As I have been unable to find it in any gazeteer I feel that the spelling was corrupted by accent and/or illiteracy on behalf of Robert. He was born about 1793 and married Elizabeth Phipps in 1814 in England. Any ideas as to what area or townland he was born in would be most
appreciated.

Finding Kerlin's Well -- a study in genealogy research

Finding Kerlin's

Well is real departure from my usual topics and format. This story

begins about 130 years ago in northern Arizona on the Beale Wagon Road.

Henry Martin Tanner, my great-grandfather was traveling across Arizona

in a wagon to settle on the Little Colorado River at a place called

Allen's Camp. Along the way they suffered greatly from lack of water,

not an unusual problem in Arizona at the… Continue

San Diego County Genealogical Society meeting summary by Colleen Fitzpatrick "The Forensic Genealogist".

A frequent visitor to our genealogical society, Colleen Fitzpatrick PhD came to set the scene of her story with a combination of logic and humor. I always enjoy hearing her speak. It was a story of mystery and intrigue. One man with a mysterious past and two families who were descended from him. She combined modern DNA research with tried and true genealogy research methodology. She was searching for current descendants using the Census, City Directories, the phone book, electronic databases as… Continue

Future fare

A modern woman is explaining to her little girl about pictures in the family
photo album.
"This is the geneticist with your surrogate mother and here's your sperm
donor and this is your father's clone. This is me holding you when you
were just a frozen embryo. And the lady with the very troubled look on
her face is your aunt, a genealogist."

What the heck is a gum copal worker?

I saw in the 1850 Federal census that my 3x great grandfather, Abijah Hitchings of Salem, Massachusetts, was a “gum copal worker.” After doing a double take, I wasn’t sure that I even transcribed these words correctly, so I called over three other people to look at the image on my…

Fair use and genealogy

A common complaint among genealogists is that someone has used their

information without permission. Genealogy is made up of two large

components; narratives and facts. Names, birth dates, death dates,

relationships, and other "facts" are not subject to a claim of

copyright. Writings, interpretations, narratives, photographs, designs,

drawings and many other original works are subject to a claim of

copyright. In addition, ideas are not subject to copyright. A list… Continue
