One of the most re-occurring questions asked me at the Mesa Regional Family History Center involves running genealogy programs on a Macintosh computer. Very frequently, during a class on Ancestral Quest Family Tree or RootsMagic 4, someone will ask if the programs can be run on an Apple Computer. The answer is yes, but with qualifications and the solution is not necessarily simple.

I have used Reunion for a few years now and have never had a problem on my Mac. I used to use Family Tree Maker but they no longer support Mac so I had to find a new program. I tried several before finally settling on Reunion. I have not looked at any of the newer versions of Family Tree Maker since I am a die hard Mac user but when I first switched, Reunion had many more features. I have never had a problem with Reunion and would recommend it to anybody using a Mac.

There are other programs out there, and many of them are good ones. I'm not sure about cross-platform programs. I use Reunion for Macintosh. It accepts gedcom files.

I don't do my genealogy that way. When I get files from someone else, I open them in a separate Reunion file. I copy into my file only those entries which I know are not duplicates of files already there.

Now that I know more about how to do research, I will not add files from another researcher until I have done some studying and verifying on my own behalf.

I may add a person (flagged as not yet studied) because that person appears to be a link, or a clear extension of my family. But, until any person on my tree meets GPS (as best I understand it) the person is not considered truly part of my family tree.

I'm picky – at this point in time two persons on our tree meet GPS standards — my husband and myself. We're working on others.

Since my method may differ widely from others, I can't speak to Reunion's compatibility. But as I use it, I'm getting very good results on a Mac with this piece of software.
