My great great grandfather, John Hedge has been eluding me for years. I know little more about him today than I knew 10 years ago when I began searching for him. Here are the only traces I have found of him.

On the 1860 census, Morris Twp, Greene county, PA, John is found at age 9 living with the Silas Rush family (dwelling #563). He was born in PA. Living next to the Rush family is the John and Mary Booth family(dwelling #564).

On the 1870 census, Morris Twp, Greene county, PA, John is now living with the Mary Booth family (dwelling # 51). He is age 17 and works as a farm hand. The Silas Rush family is in dwelling #49.

On the 1880 census Morris Twp, Greene county, PA, John is married to Sarah Elisabeth Wood ( dwelling # 112). He is listed as 30 years old, working as farm labor, He was born in PA as were both of his parents. Mary Booth is living in dwelling #111.

By 1900 Elisabeth (Lizzie) Hedge is living in Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania as a widow with 2 children, Lee age 16 and Iva age 14. So, from this I can narrow a death date for John to between 1886-bef 1900

Now, here is the problem. I can not find parents for John Hedge. I suspect that John is tied into the Rush and Booth families, but can not find any proof. I know that the Booth and Rush families intermarried. But can not fit John into either family.Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look next. To complicate matters a little more there is another John Hedge in Washington co, PA who was born abt 1845. Researchers often mix the 2 John Hedges up as one person, but they are definitely 2 different people. Thanks for any help, thought or ideas of where to look next

Welcome, Dawn-

I looked at the 1850 census, and there is an Absalom Hedge in Morris, Greene County, PA. Could Absalom be an uncle or relative to John Hedge? I looked for Absalom in 1860 and he is in Marion, Greene County, PA.
Also, I took a quick look at Family Search, and it seems a Susannah Funk had a married an Unknown Hedge in 1849, then married Silas Hedge about 1850. I'm always a bit cautious about these records, but it may be worth checking out. The record lists this Susannah Funk as mother to John Hedge, which would explain John Hedge's presence in the Rush household in 1860. Looking at the 1860 census you have provided, I would also assume that Susan Rush is not the mother of the Rush children, but their stepmother?

So, I would try to find out if Susannah did in fact marry a Hedge at some point. I've not looked for Greene County, PA vital records, but see what is available for the 1849/1850 years.
Kate sometimes it just takes another pair of eyes looking at a problem After all this time I never even considered Susannah being his mother and having remarried, What is it about not being able to see the forest for the trees? You and Gene have given me alot of things to look into. Thanks so much!
Hi Dawn-
I found this site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~morrgary/families...

It includes more information on Susannah's father, Michael Funk.
