Surnames are Medendorp and Vanderschaaf. Medendorps seem to have come from Groningen. I have a John Medendorp, born in the 1920's came here in 1857, settled in Lafayette, Indiana. I would like to know if he is related to the Medendorps who settled in Michigan and if so how?

Vanderschaaf: Bob or Robert Vanderschaaf was in the 1855 census near Sheboygan, Wisconsin, was in Lafayette, Indiana by 1860. Was in 1870 census of Lafayette, Tippecanoe county. Wife Gezina died in 1872, buried in Springvale Cemetery in Lafayette. Would like to know where they came from in the Netherlands, also when did Bob die and where buried.
Gloria,

Possibly these are your Vanderschaaf ancestors (from Genlias):

Rikkert Jans van der Schaaf, 25, born Westernieland, Eenrum, carpenter, son of Jan Emes van der Schaaf, carpenter, and Anna Rikkerts Kast;
and
Gezina Stuivinga, 24, born Eenrum, daughter of Klaas Cornelis Stuivinga, farmer, and Julia Johanna Uilkens
married 18 November 1841 in Eenrum, prov. Groningen.

The name Medendorp is indeed mostly found in Groningen.
That could be. Bob (Robert) Vanderschaaf was a carpenter according to the census. He and wife Gezina did have a daughter named Julia, (perhaps named for her grandmother?) Do you have a year for this marriage?

Thank you very much.
18 November 1841. Rikkert was born on 22 September 1816 in Eenrum (his birth act is on Alle Groningers).
Not only a daughter Julia but also a daughter Anna who married a Medendorp. So the dates pretty much fit and the naming pattern fits.

Hi, John!

I think we have a SIP relatives in common!

I have Maritje Arianse Sip, born 19 Oct. 1659 in Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Netherlands, and Jan Adrianse Sip, born 24 May 1662, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Netherlands, both as children of ADRIAN Sip and Grietje Wareents Van Schonevelt--both born in the Netherlands--who married on 4 Feb. 1656 in Nieuw Amsterdfam, Nieuw Netherlands.

Maritje married Seba Epkese Banta on 6 Nov. 1678 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Bergen Co., NJ. They had 10 children.

The only difference I see is the name of their father: I have Adrian and you have Claas. But I believe this is the SAME person.

Please contact me--I'd love to hear from you!

Madehlinne

My Jan Arianse Sip (sometimes called Johannes) married Joanna Idens van Voorst 23 APR 1684 in New York, New York. The marriage is recorded as: Met attestatie Van Bergen.
